Leviticus Chapter 11 "Ceremonial Laws. [11:1 -
15:33]" This Bible Study is provided by http://www.theseason.org/ with permission from it's author, R. Christopherson. This book of Leviticus is now turning to the study of the ceremonial laws. In this chapter we will read of the dos and don't of the health laws. Defining what is clean and what is unclean for human consumption for the children of Israel to eat. Leviticus 11:1 "And the Lord spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them," So this is God giving instruction to both Moses the law given, and Aaron the priest health laws with the ceremonial laws together. Leviticus 11:2 "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, `These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beast that are on the earth." The Israelites had four basic divisions of animals, they were land animals; water animals; birds of the air; and swarming animals. In Deuteronomy 14:5, 6 it enumerates of the ten clean animals. Deuteronomy 14:5, 6 "The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois. And every beast that parteth the hoof, and cleaveth the cleft into two claws, and cheweth the cud among the beasts, that ye shall eat." The Pygarg, is a wild goat, while the fallow deer and the roebuck are one and the same. The wild ox stated in verse 5 is what we call the antelope, and the chamois is a mountain sheep. Leviticus 11:3 "Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat." "Parting of the hoof" is the splitting of the hoof. What is noticed is that the split go from the bottom of the hoof to the top of the hoof. Along with the split hoof, the animal must also chew the cud. These animals are the beef, deer, goats, and sheep. Leviticus 11:4 "Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you." The setting forth of these food laws are not arbitrary to the individual, for what we eat plays a most important role on whether we have good health, or have sickness. God has created these flesh bodies that our souls live in, and He knows what is good for them to survive in good health, and He is warning us of those things that are poison to our flesh body. God is giving to you, through the health law writings of Moses, the key to maintaining good health, and it is up to you to obtain that wisdom, and obey God's instructions, as much as possible. This is not a religious thing, but a health thing; and all the food laws are given for the preservation of health of the race. Some of the laws are for sanitary reasons, some from peculiarities of climate, but others are for maintaining separation from other peoples. Leviticus 11:5 "And the the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the the hoof; he is unclean unto you." The "the coney" is the old English was of saying "rabbit". the chewing of the cud is called ruminating, because they have four different stomachs. So after they have eaten the grass, the sit to rest, and then they move the food from one room of the stomach to another in the digestive process. The coney does this, but he does not have the parted or split hoof. Leviticus 11:6 "And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you." Again the rabbit does chew the cud but down not have the divided hoof, and is unclean. Leviticus 11:7 "And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Here we are talking about pork products. The swine is just as unclean today to these flesh bodies of ours that they were in Jesus' day and Moses' day, for these are given to us for the sake of keeping our bodies healthy, with as few poisons from other animals as possible. If you want to eat the poisons from these swine and other unclean animals, then don't blame God for your own ignorance and stupidity, for he is warning you in these verses to stay away from them. No preacher of teacher that teaches against these health laws, and says they are no more in affect, can stop those poisons from entering your body, as the pork and other unclean foods slide into your stomach. Jesus told you point plank that His coming in no way changed even the least letter of the any of the law of God in Matthew 5:17-20, and and if you take pleasure in defying God and his law, then learn to accept those diseases and other sickness in your body, that come when those immune systems break down from your use of those poisons. Leviticus 11:8 "Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you." It simply cannot be more simply put, these things stated that are unclean, we in our flesh bodies are not to eat. Leviticus 11:9 "These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: Whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat." It can't be any clearer as to what we can eat that comes from the waters; the ocean, the rivers and the lakes. Those creatures of the water must have both fins and scales, or you simply should not be eating them. The last time I checked the crabs and the shrimp do not have scales, neither does the cat fish from the rivers and lakes, and many other bottom fish. Leviticus 11:10 "And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:" Why are they an abomination to you? Because they carry things within them that will tare down your immune system and make you sick. It may not be instant, but in the course of time, and the amount you eat, in time will catch up with you, and damage your health. People understand that very high voltage can kill you, that falling off a high cliff can also kill you, so why can't they understand that what you put into your mouth can also kill you or make you very sick. All God is trying to do for His people is warn you and I that in our bodies we have certain protections to keep us healthy, and He wrote a set of laws governing the things that is safe to put into these bodies, and other things and creatures that were created for other reasons than for food. The eagle, the crow, the crab, the swine are natures garbage pails, put here on earth to clean up the filth that accumulates from creatures dying, and other creatures like man that just don't clean up after himself. So if you say that "My preacher says that it is okay for us to eat those things? Jesus told you clearly where that preacher stands in His kingdom. Matthew 5:19 "Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them [these commandments], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." The health laws are not the blood sacrifice laws [ordinances and statutes], and animals set for blood sacrifice are not unclean animals. The blood sacrifice ordinances were completely done away with because the need for they were fulfilled in our Lord Jesus Christ at the cross. Hebrews 10:9 "Then said He, "Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God," He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second." The first covenant that established the way that we communed with God, and had our sins covered was taken away the moment that our Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross. His blood because the covering for our sins for all times, and in His death the second covenant or testament was established, "for through the shed blood of Jesus Christ became the only way to our Heavenly Father and eternal life." Hebrews 10:10 "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." In these old laws we have studied here in Leviticus, it was plain that the process of animal sacrifice and that continual burning on the altar of God had to be done every morning and every evening. Then all those other offerings for sin, trespass, peace and all the rest was an ongoing thing. These daily animal sacrifices were what was done away with for all time, because Jesus Christ's blood became the only way back to the Father; to commune with Him, and have us both protected and blessed by him. Hebrews 10:12, 13 "But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; For henceforth expecting till His enemies be made His footstool." This Man Jesus Christ, once He had offered this one time sacrifice on the cross at Calvary hill, rose from the dead, and ascended to the right hand of the Father. Jesus is there right now, and He will be there until he comes at the sounding of the seventh trump, when every one of His and our enemies will be made His footstool, in His Millennium kingdom. Friend, it's not a game for us to fool around with, but part of the very plan of God. As Christians we must learn to rightly divide the Word of God, and let it instruct us in all our lives. Those things that deal with sacrifice and offerings are not to be mixed up with laws dealing with our physical health and well being while we are living in these flesh bodies. The health laws are in affect as long as there is an earth age of flesh man, We are living in that earth age now, and it will not come to a close until God makes it come to a close, and all the prophecies dealing with this age have come to pass. Then you will know it, for the time of this flesh age kingdom coming to a close will end instantly at the sounding of the seventh trump. I Corinthians 15:50 "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption." At Christ's return, He will establish a kingdom that shall cover the entire earth. Wherever Jesus is, there is kingdom is also, and at the seventh trump He will be here on earth. If you are on the earth, you will be under His kingdom. You will be part of His domain, and He will be the One ruling king of the entire earth. It's a fact, and the other fact here, is that there will be no soul living in his or her flesh [corruptible] body at that time. The spiritual body as the angels have is the incorruption, or incorruptible body of that Millennium age. Get that straight in your mind. I Corinthians 15:51 "Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed," This was a mystery that Paul is letting us know, that the Holy Spirit of God had revealed to Him. There is a time coming when all souls that are living in their flesh body will be changed instantly, will they die?, No, they will be changed, also called "raised". This is not as some traditional thought states in a rapture, for there will be no rapture, that tradition of men comes for the mind of a mentally ill woman that lived in 1830, and preachers tried to make something of that demonic vision. But there will be a change, just as Christ's body was changed as he stood there with Moses and Elias on mount transfiguration, and Peter James and John witness the change come. I Corinthians 15:52 "In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed." Faster than you can wink your eye, when that last trump sounds [the seventh trump], this earth age of flesh man will be over and done with. [The need for this earth age came about in that first earth age, when Satan rebelled and turned against God. One third of all God's created souls rebelled to follow Satan, and God in turn ended that earth age.] So when that last trump sounds, there will be no more sickness, no more ageing, not more loss of memory, and no more Satan and his evil things for he will be locked away in the pit until the end of this thousand year period. This flesh body that you are in changes at the seventh trump, so if someone tells you that he is Jesus Christ, and you are in your flesh body, and sin is all around, and your son and daughter look younger than you do, then that man is a false christ. If your preacher tells you that Jesus is here, and all of your family are still in their flesh body, than your pastor is leading you to Satan, he's leading you to the Antichrist. We are living in that generation that this will happen, and God expects you to be wise enough to know fact from fiction. So why have I been stating all these things? Because my friend, you are still in your flesh body, and your body is designed by God with all its immune systems and strengths, and God has given you a guide to keep your flesh body healthy while your soul is here in the flesh age living on earth. If somebody is telling you that your flesh has changed, and you don't need to follow the health laws, then ask yourself: Is he from God, or from Satan and the demonic. He surely can't be getting his information from God, for the Spirit of God does not go against His Word. The food laws are talking about our eating of foods that are sold at the store, or raised for food consumption. If they are declared unclean foods they are an abomination to you. Why you, because it is out to harm your health. The food laws are not the blood ordinances for sacrificial offerings. God designated the sacrificial animals to be without spot or blemish, and they were types used for a temporary time, until that time when God would provide the perfect sacrifice for one and all times. These are the things we read about through the eighth chapter of Leviticus, and only these sacrificial offerings of animals and birds fulfilled in Christ's death on the cross. Jesus Christ was the supreme Sacrificial Lamb, without spot and without blemish. Jesus was perfect in every manner. Even in the breaking of the bread by the priest in the peace offering, it was a type of Christ, who was broken for us at the cross. These types given in all the book of Leviticus do relate to today, as Paul told us in his writings. I Corinthians 10:11 "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come." The entire Old Testament was written to be examples for those people living in that last generation of this earth age of flesh man. We are living in that time, and even these sacrificial offerings are examples of our Lord's sacrifice. Leviticus 11:11 "They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcasses in abomination." You just don't eat animals that pray on other animals. Bottom fish, crows and animals that feast off the dead of other animals are not to be eaten. Leviticus 11:12 "Whatsoever hath no fins or scales in the water, that shall be an abomination unto you." Leviticus 11:13
"And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls;
they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the
ospray," The eagle and vulture are in the same class. The "ossifrage" in the Hebrew tongue means "bone-breaker", this is derived from the creature taking the prey up in the air and dropping it on the rocks below to break it's bones. The "ospray" is a sea-eagle, better known today as the sea-gull, which is the vacuum sweeper of the beaches, cleaning up the filth on the beach. Leviticus 11:14 "And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;" The "kite" is the falcon. Leviticus 11:15 "Every raven after his kind;" When stating "raven", it is referring to black birds of any kind. Leviticus 11:16 "And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind," The "cuckow" is the sea-gull, and this applies to all scavenger. Leviticus 11:17 "And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl," The "cormorant" is thought to be a pelican, but this is referring to any bird that casts itself into the sea. The "little owl" is what we call the owl today, but the "great owl", are "night birds." Leviticus 11:18 "And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle," The "swan" is not the swan of our day, but it is given as the "ibis", a "bat or heron". "The gier eagle" or little vulture, in the Hebrew tongue means "the merciful". Leviticus 11:19 "And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat." Leviticus 11:20 "All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you." Leviticus 11:21 "Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;" This now is talking about swarming things. Leviticus 11:22 "Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind." The locust, beetle, and the grasshopper are of the foods of the prophets. Leviticus 11:23 "But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you." The mice family would be included here, as an abomination to you for food. Leviticus 11:24 "And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even." This then covers those animals dead carcasses that are forbidden to touch, for in touching them you can pick up the diseases that are contained in them. We are now discussing the aquatic and winged animals. The reason that they would be "unclean until the even", or evening, is that once they had washed, they would be clean. Leviticus 11:25 "And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even." Once an animal died, there would be a person appointed to carry that dead carcase outside the camp ["whosoever beareth ought of the carcase"], this is the person spoken of here, and God has declared him to be unclean unto the evening. Then when he bathed and washed his clothes he would be clean. Leviticus 11:26 "The carcase of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclan unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean." These animals are unclean for human consumption, for food; and God has also called their dead carcasses unclean to touch also. Leviticus 11:27 "And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even." So this is talking about dead cats, dogs, bears, and so on...all dead animals that walk on all fours are not to be touched. Leviticus 11:28 "And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you." Here again God gives you instructions that when you have a dead animal, such as your pet cat or dog, and you have put that animal away, make sure you clean up thoroughly afterwards. This is point out by the fact that it had to be disposed of out side of the camp, or in our case, our homes. Leviticus 11:29 "These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind," As we discussed earlier in this chapter, the Hebrews had divided animals into four classes: animals of the land, animals in the water, those flying in the air, and swarming creatures [creeping things]. These animals here in verse twenty nine are the creeping things. The weasel is in this group because "it comes into the house and glides over the heave loaves with a creeping thing in his mouth". So they were considered very unclean, right along with the mouse and the "tortoise", "zab" in the Hebrew, its a toad. Leviticus 11:30 "And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole." It is naming specific animals here that are unclean to touch, because of what they feed off of, and where and how they life. these animals are not commonly found in households. Leviticus 11:31 "These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even." Better translated, "most unclean" of all the creeping animals. The instruction here is that when you touch one of their carcasses, then go wash up, and if they touch your clothes, then was those articles. Of course these are creatures that stay close to where humans are, such as in our gardens, and houses, in our households. Leviticus 11:32 "And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed." This is talking about insects and flying things. If one dies and falls into a container that is to be used for food, that container must be washed in water, as well as your hands, before you use them. Leviticus 11:33 "And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it." Remember Leviticus 6:28 dealing with the contents of a sin offering: The priest could wash the brass vessels, but the earthen vessels were considered unclean before the Lord, and had to be broken. Leviticus 11:34 "Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean." That and such, are not part of the original text, so this should read: "Of all food eaten on which water cometh, shall be unclean:" Scholars say that this water talked about is the actual water that is used in the preparation of the food, that water must be discarded, and the containers cleansed. This again is just plain common sense. You wash the dishes after the food is prepared. Also here, the drinking water which has had a creature fall into it must be thrown out, and the empty water container cleaned. Leviticus 11:35 "And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you." This deals with the place where food is prepared, those places must be kept clean. Leviticus 11:36 "Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean." This is talking about flowing water, like in a stream. The part up stream from the carcass is clean, and down stream from where the carcass lies, is unclean. Again just common sense. When you take the carcass out of the stream, in time it will purify itself. The one removing the carcass was considered unclean and must cleanse himself. Leviticus 11:37 "And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean." If a dead carcass fell or touched a kernel of corn to be planted, it was still considered clean. When the hardened covering over the live part inside falls away in the growing season, it would not cause the new corn to be unclean. The earth would tare down unclean part and cleanse the unclean part around the plant. Leviticus 11:38 "But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you." However if water is present when the carcass of the dead animal falls on corn seed, then the seed is contaminated, for the water will soften the covering around the embryo of the seed and make the kernel unclean. Leviticus 11:39 "And if any beast, of which ye may eat die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even." This is talking about clean animals that die naturally or by another animal, they may not be touched or eaten. Leviticus 11:40 "And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even. Here again, when a clean animal dies, after you touch or remove the animal from your household, wash your hand and the clothes that came in contact with that dead animal. Leviticus 11:41 "And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten." This is talking about creeping or swarming things. Again this is talking about the rats, mice, weasels and such things are not to be eaten. Leviticus 11:42 "Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination." This is talking about insects, centipedes [spiders and worms], and so on. Don't eat them. Leviticus 11:43 "Ye shall not make your selves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby." This is a warning to the children of Israel, for they grew up among the unclean of Egypt, where they eat all sorts of things, and were not governed by any health laws. God is now preparing them to their entry into the promise land, and how they can keep themselves clean and in good health. God is telling the Israelites to use common sense in what you eat and the things you use to eat with. Leviticus 11:44 "For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." God is telling Israel to be holy for He is holy. Sanctify yourself, set yourself apart from the other nations. God is telling them, I am holy, I am the Lord. Leviticus 11:45 "For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy." God is letting the children of Israel know that they are a select people, and He is the Lord and God. Just as God is holy, He expects His people to be holy also, as He is. This is given in preparation for the journey from mount Sinai to the promise land in Canaan, and when they establish themselves as a nation. Leviticus 11:46 "This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:" God is giving us the four types of animals in his creation: the land, sea, air and swarming things. Leviticus 11:47 "To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten."
