Numbers 13:1 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,"

Numbers 13:2 ""Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I gave unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of there father shall ye send a man, every one a rule among them."

This is also recorded in Deuteronomy 1:22. There it was worded that the congregation is the one that told Moses that a man be selected from each tribe to go into the promise land and explore the land to see what the land holds for them. Moses liked and acted on the suggestion, because it came from the people of each tribe and they had a hand in choosing the men. Moses took that suggestion to the Lord and the God in turn spake to Moses and approved the suggestion.

Numbers 13:3 "And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel."

As you read over these names, don't confuse these men with the other twelve that were selected in Numbers 1:4-16; Or those that brought gifts to the altar in Chapter seven. These are not the tribe princes, but well respected men in their families.

Numbers 13:4 "And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua, the son of Zaccur."

Numbers 13:5 "Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori."

Numbers 13:6 "Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh."

Caleb was the only one that returned with a good report, and said lets go into the land and take it.

Numbers 13:7 "Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph."

Numbers 13:8 "Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osea the son of Num."

Moses renamed Osea after the spies came back from their journey into the land. Osea's name was changed to Joshua, or Johoshua. Joshua was also one of the spies that had given a good report to go and backed up Caleb's plea to take the land now.

Numbers 13:9 "Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu."

Numbers 13:10 "Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi."

Numbers 13:11 "Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi."

Numbers 13:12 "Of the tribe of Dan, Ammel the son of Gamalli."

Numbers 13:13 "Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael."

Numbers 13:14 "Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi."

Numbers 13:15 "Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi."

Numbers 13:16 "These are the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Num Johoshua."

"Johoshua" [Joshua], means in "YHVH's Savior". Joshua gave support to Calab's statement that it is time to go in and take the land. God promised us the land, and He promised us the victory.

Numbers 13:17 "And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them, "Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:"

Moses sent these twelve men into the land to spy out the land of Canaan, not only to see what was there, but what defenses the nations that occupied the land had. So what Moses was telling the spies, to take the main road about nine miles south, then go eastward through the mountain passes. This was the easiest way into the promise land, for they would avoid the people of other nations that saw them coming into Canaan.

Numbers 13:18 "And see the land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they be strong or weak, few or many;"

Take a close look at the type of land that is there, whether it will bear crops? And look at the people that are living there, are their cities fortified and are they a strong people, and how many are they? In other words size up their enemies strength. Stop and think for a moment, God said that He would go before them, and give them the victory, so why would Moses consider for one moment what the enemy strength was, if he had trusted God for the victory? No, Moses was back listening to the people, and even if God said go ahead, remember that if you want to go against the leading of the Father, He will let you.

Numbers 13:19 "And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what the cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;"

You would think that by this time in their journey, the children of Israel would be very trusting of our Heavenly Father and His care for them. These Israelites had seen all the miracles that God had done in Egypt to secure their release from bondage. He parted the Red sea, brought quail to them when they needed meat, and water when the water around them was bitter. You would think that these Israelites would be ready to follow Moses right into the Promise land and watch as God cleared the land of the evil nations that were there, and give them the blessings that they expected. Moses wanted to know what type of people he was about to go to war with. Moses is taking his eyes off the Lord, and comparing his army with the forces in the land of Canaan. Moses is seeking information that would allow him to plan military action.

Numbers 13:20 "And what the land is, whether it be fat or lean, whither there be wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the time of the firstripe grapes."

Is the land fertile, and are there trees on the land for our homes. It would be the start of harvest time for the firstripe grapes come in July. Moses wanted some samples of the fruit brought back, he wanted to taste of the goodness before it was given to him. Do you think these spies will be of good courage, of cowards, at the sight of these people.

Numbers 13:21 "So they went up, and searched the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, as men come to Hamath."

These spies search the land all the way to the neighborhood of Hamath, to the north of the land of Canaan, the were in most all the land gathering information to bring back to Moses.

Numbers 13:22 "And they ascended by the south, and came to Hebron; where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)"

These spies came into the land of Canaan by the "south", in the Hebrew text "Negeb", the desert to the south of the promise land. The first city they came to was called "Hebron", with its ancient name "Kirjath-arab". The name means ("stronghold of Arab"). Genesis 23:2 tells us that this is the location where Sarah, the wife of Abraham, and mother of the Israelites through Isaac, passed away here. "Now Hebron was built", however in the Hebrew text, this city was "banah" or rebuilt seven years before Zoan in Egypt.

Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, were cities that Anak and his family built, those offspring of the second influx of the fallen angels, that came after the flood of Noah's time. The people were very large, giant people and were called the Geber, and their size frightened ten of the spies. They were thinking that they had to do their fighting, and they left God out of their plans.

"Zoan" means "a place of departure", for it was an ancient city of lower Egypt, called by the Greeks, "Tanis". It stood on the eastern bank of the Tanitic branch of the Nile. This city was the capital city of the Shepherd Kings dynasty in Egypt, built seven years after Hebron, and as we read in Genesis, it was where Abraham buried Sarah when she died there.

Genesis 23:1, 2 "And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah." [1] "And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her." [2]

So this city of Hebron existed and was built by Anak before the time of Abraham. These men that are named here will be addressed over thirty five years later, when the Israelites move in to take the land. Joshua 15:13, 14 tell us that Caleb will drive Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai out of the land, and these three will be killed by the men of Judah, as recorded in Judges 1:10.

Numbers 13:23 "And they came unto the brook of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bare it between two of the staff; and they brought of the pomegranates, and of the figs."

This was a very large cluster of grapes, for you hung the cluster of grapes on a pole and it took two men to carry the grapes. The pomegranates are fruit that are used in places of worship, while the figs in this area of Canaan were the main stay of their diet, second only to bread.

Spiritually speaking, Jesus Christ is the vine, and the pomegranates are the worship of Him, and the figs being those things necessary to sustain us in this life of flesh man. So what this is saying is that everything to sustain life is there in the promise land.

Numbers 13:24 "The place was called the brook Eshcol, because of the cluster of grapes which the children of Israel cut down from thence."

"Eshcol" in the Hebrew text means "cluster of grapes". The land is very fruitful, but what about the rest of their report back to Moses and the Elders of Israel.

Numbers 13:25 "And they returned from searching of the land after forty days."

"Forty" is the number in Biblical numerics for "Probation". So they returned back to the camp at the end of August and this would have been exactly six months after the Tabernacle was first put up, back at the base of Sinai.

Numbers 13:26 "And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word shewed them the fruit of the land."

So these twelve spies returned back to the camp sight, and brought with them the fruit that the took from the land of Canaan. Just as God had promised them, the fruit of the land was very good.

Numbers 13:27 "And they told him, and said, "We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it."

The fruit that they brought back was evidence enough that the land was truly a land that floweth with milk and honey, rich and fertile.

Numbers 13:28 "Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there."

The spies saw the cities and walls or their cities, and they noticed that they were "very great", meaning "super human". Structures that normal human beings could not have constructed. This report may have been accurate, but they did not consider God going before them, on the fact that these super human giants were able to build something that man could not. They noticed that the wickedness of the people were also very great. These twelve spies gazed on these men of Anak, those offspring of the fallen angels, and their size and features brought fear to ten of the spies.

Numbers 13:29 "The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan."

These Amalekites, the offspring of the lineage of Esau, along with the other nations that dwelt and intermarried with the Amalekites brought fear in their minds. Sure the land is good, but to these spies, it was impossible for them to go against these people with their army. They had left God completely out of their plans, and of course this lack of faith in God's promises would make God angry. The Jebusites were the one that founded the heathen city of Jerusalem, for Jebus is the name of Jerusalem in its unclean state. These five heathen nations were enough to scare anyone that lacked the faith in God. God told them that these people were there in Exodus 3:8, and yet when they saw it all come to pass, they forgot. God told them I will lead you in, so fear not." And the Israelites lost their faith.

We are also approaching another promise land today, and we are at the border of that land. The spies have been sent out, and we know from Scripture everything that is suppose to happen before we enter into that promise land. Yet, most Christians are seeking after another way, other than having the faith to rely of our Heavenly Father, and put their trust in Him and His Word.

Numbers 13:30 "And Caleb stilled the People before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it."

Caleb is listening to all that is being said by these other ten spies, and his is getting a little "stilled" hostile over what is being said. He knows the promises that God made and he wants to get going into the land and take it over. Caleb was the only one out of the twelve that had the confidence that God would do what He promised He would do.

Numbers 13:31 "But the men that went up with him said, "We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we."

Do you get the picture, the ten cowards are bad mouthing Caleb and want no part of entering into the Promise land at this time. They just don't trust or believe that God can keep His Word. Joshua was silent, but in the end backed Caleb in his effort in going into the land.

Numbers 13:32 "And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, "The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature."

Now stop and think for a moment, in not to distant of time, Satan and all of his fallen angels are going to be booted out onto the earth. [Revelation 12:7-9] God told you it will happen, and it will. Most of the church world today are building their little fences, their fly-away doctrines so they don't have to worry when the giants return and possess the land we call earth. It is coming, and God told us that we will be protected from Satan and his host or army of fallen angels. God also told us in Revelation 9:4, 5 that you will be sealed with the truth before they arrive, or you will be just as scared as these Israelites out there in the wilderness of Paran, and taken in by Satan's lies and deception. The Israelites doubted that the Lord would give them victory over these people, and this will anger God. Just as those spies gave a slanderous report on the land of Canaan, so we are seeing the traditions of today giving a slanderous report of our times, and trying to circumvent the plan of God, and create their own way. All of the end times prophecies are happening around us, and most Christians simply have their minds void of God's promises. They are out chasing after men's traditions, and mixing heathen though with God's Word.

If David had taken this line of thought with Goliath, he would have had his head cut off, and fed to the wild animals. But he went in the name of the Lord, and God lead that stone right were it had to go, and the giant was killed. God had faith, and he went up on that hill in the name of the Lord, and he told Goliath that God had given him to himself, and he was dead meat. David picked up the five stones, and select one for his sling-shot, and set the direction for God to lead it for the victory. God gave him the victory, just as He will for anyone, including you and I, when we call on His name.

Numbers 13:33 "And there we saw giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.."

"We were in our own sight", and anytime that there is no faith, then mankind relies only on his own sight. Those things that a person can see, touch, hear, smell and experience by himself. God made a promise to Moses and the children of Israel that He would give them the Land of Canaan. Did they believe Him? Of course they didn't. As these spies sat and watched these giants [Geber] of Nephilim going and coming from their towns, they shut God out of their minds, and it became a battle between those giants and themselves. Remember that these giants they observed were children genetically from supernatural beings. Nephilim that were not born as you and I but came to earth out of their first estate, from that other realm that we call heaven.

Jude 6, 7 "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." [6] "Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." [7]

These "giants" are called the "nephilim" in the Hebrew text. The first of those giants or Nephilim came to earth and married the daughters of men, as spoken of in Genesis 6:1-8, but were all destroyed in the flood of Noah's day. However this was a second influx or irruption of "nephilim", fallen angels that came and entered into this earth age of flesh man against the will of God. They are the ones spoken of here in Jude 6: "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation,..."

In Genesis 3 and 4 Satan tried to destroy the Seed of Adam, the blood line that the Messiah would come through, when his son Cain killed Adam's son Abel. When that attempt failed through the birth of Seth, Satan sent many of his fallen angels to marry the daughters of men, and breed polluted offspring. Remember that this earth age of flesh man is here and in existence because of what happened in the first earth age. In that age, souls did not live in their flesh bodies but as the Angels have, and when Satan rebelled against God, one third of all God's created souls rebelled also and followed Satan. This earth age of flesh man then allows all souls to be "born from above" [born again, as stated in John 3]; born through the womb of woman, and innocent of the first earth age, and able to choose whether they will follow God or Satan.

So these sons of Anak that these spies viewed on in their journey through the promise land, were born of the second influx of Nephilim that came to earth after the flood of Noah's day. Sure they were big, tall and strong but remember that God left these five nations in the land so that the beasts of the field would not reclaim the land, and the land would not return into a wilderness.

In our generation there will be another time when Nephilim or fallen angels will come to earth, and it will be because Michael and his army will boot Satan out of heaven, and throw those fallen angels of Satan out with him. This is spoken of in Revelation 12:7 - 9.

Revelation 12:7 - 9 "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels," [7] "And prevailed not, neither was there place found any more in heaven." [8] "And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." [9]

Satan goes by many names, the "dragon" was his name in the first earth age; the "old serpent" from the garden of Eden; and we know him today as the "devil" that deceives many in the world today. When the sixth trump sounds, Satan and his defeated army will be cast onto this earth with human beings, and he will deceive the people of this earth age with his flood of lies for five months, as Revelation 9:5, 10 tell us. When the spies of Moses day saw these angelic beings, they stood in awe, they completely forgot what God promised them, and tried to compare their strength with that of these supernatural beings. For that mistrust they will pay a dear price, for God will not allow them to enter into the promise land. All but one of the twelve said that we cannot overcome these giants.
