Numbers
Chapter 28 "Law as to Offerings." Numbers 28:1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying," Numbers 28:2 "Command the children of Israel, and say unto them, `My offerings and My bread for My sacrifices made by fire, for a sweet savour unto Me, shall ye observe to offer unto Me in their due season.' "
"My offerings" is "korban" in the Hebrew text. There are appointed times for each of these offerings and sacrifices that are to be made by fire, and when they are observed they become "a sweet savour unto Me". So the first thing that is covered are the daily sacrifices. Burnt offerings in the morning and in the evening, every day. The details of these daily instructions for these daily sacrifices is given in Exodus 29. This daily sacrifice is pointing to the children of Israel sanctifying their lives and souls to the Lord daily.
Each feast is more intensive that the feast before, so when you get to the last feast of the year, the feast of tabernacles, the number of sacrifices and offerings require much more than the other feasts.
Numbers 28:3 "An thou shalt say unto them, Thus is the offering made by fire which ye shall offer unto the Lord; two lambs of the first year without spot day by day, for a continual burnt offering."
The offering spoken of here is the "Daily Sacrifice", given in the morning and evening each day of the year. It was a "continual burnt offering", the "olah offering", which conveys the meaning as being wholly burnt. In this offering it required two lambs daily in the sacrifices. Being without spot and blemish, was a type for the perfect sacrifice that would come later, that of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Numbers 28:4 "The one lamb shalt thou offer in the morning, and the other lamb shalt thou offer at even."
One lamb in the morning and one lamb is offered in the evening.
Numbers 28:5 And a tenth part of the ephah of flour for a meat offering, mingled with the forth part of an hin of beaten oil."
A forth part of a hin would be one quart of pure olive oil, mixed with the flour. Remember that the flour and the oil are both a type for Christ.
Numbers 28:6 "It is a continual burnt offering, which was ordained in mount Sinai for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord."
Numbers 28:7 And the drink offering thereof shall be the forth part of the him for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the Lord for a drink offering."
"The drink offering" is the "Nesek" which simply means "to pour out". This of course was part of the daily sacrifice that God required to be given twice a day, in the morning and at evening. Again the forth part of a hin would be about one quart, for a hin is about one of our gallons. This wine that was used here in this drink offering, was an older wine.
Numbers 28:8 "And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even: as the meat offering of the morning, and as the drink offering thereof, thou shalt offer it, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord."
This is still talking about the daily sacrifice, and the drink offering that goes along with those daily sacrifices. This verse addresses the evening offering only, and the drink offering that went with the burnt sacrifice of one lamb. So these eight verses covers the daily offerings, given for the people, along with the meat and drink offerings that were made with those sacrifices.
Remember that these offerings were for that certain time period under the old covenant, but once our Lord was made the perfect sacrifice for our sins, all of these feasts and sacrifice ordinances were done away, for Christ became all of these sacrifice upon His death. When Jesus gave up the Ghost hanging on the cross, that veil into the holy of holies was rent in two, and each of us now may go directly to the Father in Jesus Name. Our right to approach the throne of God is our faith in that finished work on the cross of Jesus Christ. Killing any animal today in the name of God is repugnant to our Heavenly Father, and is blasphemy to the name of Jesus Christ. Jesus' blood is sufficient to cover all sins of those that come to the Father under the blood of Christ. God doesn't want our sacrifices today, He wants our love to Him.
Numbers 28:9 "And on the sabbath day two lambs of the first year without spot, and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, and the drink offering theeof:"
Then on each of the "Sabbath days" two lambs were also required to be sacrificed, this was in addition to the daily sacrifice of one lamb in the morning and one in the evening. Again this Sabbath day sacrifice would have the additional meat and drink offering along which used old wine "yayin", as well as pure olive oil, with the fine flour. The two tenth deals of flour would be one half gallon dry in measurement.
Some of these sacrifices would not be given until the children of Israel were in the promise land and settled in the land of their inheritance, and that is why God stated for some of these sacrifices, that when you cross over into the promise land then keep those that were designated for that time. These times of sacrifice were first given to the children of Israel when they were camped at the foot of mount Sinai some 38 1/2 years before this summary was given here by Moses. Most all of those adults that were living at that time are dead and gone, and those that are receiving the message here from Moses were just tiny children then, or born along the trails in the wilderness.
Numbers 28:10 "This is the burnt offering of every sabbath, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering."
God God is making it clear that on each Sabbath, not only are you to have the two daily sacrifices, in the morning and evening, but an additional burnt offering and the drink offering. Remember that the "continual sacrifice" was called the "daily sacrifice".
Numbers 28:11 "And in the beginnings of your months ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the Lord; two young bullocks, and one ram, seven lambs of the first year without spot;"
So in addition to the daily continual sacrifice, and the Sabbath sacrifice, on the first day of each month, God required this "beginnings of your months sacrifice". Notice that with each additional sacrifice there is an added amount of animals to be sacrificed, along with a larger meat and drink offering. The "daily sacrifices" started with a lamb in the morning and one in the evening. Then the "Sabbath sacrifice" had two lambs, and now on the "beginnings of your months" sacrifices, there is a requirement of two young bullocks, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year, without spot. Also on the first of the months, the two silver trumpets were to be blown to announce the day. The reason that the trumpets were blown were to call the heads of the families together at the tabernacle; and the trumpets were also blown when it was time to pick up your camp site and move on to the next location. The other purpose for the trumpets were for calling the army to arm themselves for war; so that the Lord would remember them and give them the victory in the battle.
Numbers 28:12 "And three tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, for one bullock; and two tenth deals of flour for a meat offering, mingled with oil, for one ram;"
This is the "Minchah" or "meat offering", and as such is a gift offering. So we see that the proportions of the meat offering, and the drink offering is in direct relation to the size of the animal to be sacrificed.
Numbers 28:13 "And a several tenth deal of flour mingled with oil for a meat offering unto one lamb; for a burnt offering of a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord."
This should read, "And a separate tenth deal of flour", meaning "a single tenth deal" of flour mingled with pure olive oil for this meat offering with one lamb that is burnt for a sacrifice to the Lord. This is about one quart of both the fine flour and the Olive oil. This is not a bullock offered here but a small lamb, and that is why only one tenth deal of flour is made with this offering. This burnt offering given here is the "Olah" offering, which means that when this lamb is placed on the altar, the smoke and sweet savour ascends to YHVH.
Just a reminder that these offerings were under the Old Covenant, and we are now under the New Covenant, which is the blood of Christ. The Apostle Paul reminds us of this purpose under the first testament or covenant in Hebrews 9:19-21.
Hebrews 9:22 "And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
When our Lord Jesus Christ went to the cross, and shed his blood, He was unblemished, spotless and the perfect sacrifice.
Hebrews 10:6, 7 "In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou has had no pleasure." [6] "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me) to do Thy wiill, O God." " [7]
The prophecies throughout all the Old Testament prophecy of that time when our Lord will willingly go to the cross to become this perfect sacrifice. It was no accident that Jesus was made the perfect sacrifice for every detail of his life and crucifixion was written by the prophets far ahead of time. Paul is quoting here from Psalms 40:6 - 8 in the prophecy of the coming Messiah, and the Sacrifice that would be shed for one and all times.
Hebrews 10:9, 10 "Then said He, "Lo I come to do Thy will, O God." He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second." [9] "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." [10]
As Jesus hung there on the cross and life blood flowed out of His vains, the blood sacrifices and offerings required under first covenant or testament were fulfilled and done away with, and in its place a Second Covenant was established by the offering of the body of our Lord Jesus Christ, given once, for all times. It is the blood of Jesus Christ that sanctifies us and sets us apart from our sins, and that is why we pray "in Jesus' name". That is the Way, the truth and the Life that comes only through the blood of Christ. For in doing so [praying in Jesus Name], we are telling God that we have faith, and accept that blood of Christ as the only sacrifice for our sins. We recognize that each of those prophecies that deal with the coming Messiah, and His death on the cross were fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the Son of the God's shed blood on the cross.
These animal sacrifices are known as "blood ordinances", and only this part of the law was fulfilled in the death of Christ on the cross. The entire rest of the law, including the health laws, the ten commandments, and those dealing with our relations with our neighbors are still in tacked, unchanged. as Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil."
Matthew 5:18 "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled." My friend, As long as you are in your flesh body, we are in this flesh age and the prophecies of the Scriptures have not been fulfilled. When Jesus comes at the seventh trump, this age of flesh man is over and done with. Satan's tribulation will be past history, and we all are changed into our incorruptible bodies, as the angels have, and the Scriptures still have not been fulfilled yet, for there is the judgment at the close of the Millennium, and the turning of ashes of those that follow Satan, after that judgment day. Then we move into the eternity, and it all will be fulfilled. Get it? All the Scriptures except the blood ordinances will be intact just as God gave them to the Prophets, Apostles, or spoke them Himself when He was alive in His flesh body. So what does God think of those that mess over His Word, and teach falsely?
Matthew 5:19 "Whosoever therefore shall break one ofr these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."
This is why we study and use the proper tools of the Scripture to understand the truths of the bible. To understand exactly what those Words mean for our lives.
Proverbs 1:7 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
Hebrews 9:14 "How much more shall the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?"
Hebrews 9:15 "And for this cause He [Jesus Christ] is the Mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance."
Every last one of these blood ordinances were nailed to the cross with Jesus Christ. It would be blasphemy to go out and sacrifice any animal after that death of our Lord was completed and paid in full.
Numbers 28:14 "And their drink offerings shall be half an hin of wine unto a bullock, and the third part of an hin unto a ram, and a forth part of an hin unto a lamb: this is the burnt offering of every month throughout the months of the year."
Remember that a hin was a liquid gallon, so it is talking about a half gallon of wine for the drink offerings here when there was a bullock to be sacrificed; a quart and a half of wine, when a ram was sacrificed; and a quart of wine when a lamb was sacrificed. This burnt offering was given the first of every month of the year.
Numbers 28:15 "And one kid of the goats for a sin offering unto the Lord shall be offered, beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering."
Again this is part of the monthly sacrifices, and the monthly sacrifices were to be given right along with the daily sacrifices, and the Sabbath sacrifices and offerings. This offering was the "Chattath", the sin offering for the previous month. In this way their sins would have been atoned for, so that the people could enter into the new month afresh from their past sins. So this verse points out that each offering is separate of the other, and each must be attended to at the prescribed time that God designated it for, in additions to the other sacrifices. The blood of the sin offering would have been poured around the altar of sin offering, whereas, yet in the others offerings, they were put on the altar, and burnt so that the smoke would ascend up to the Lord as a sweet savour to the Lord. That's why the sin offering is poured out to the ground, for it is not for God, but for the sins that have been committed.
Numbers 28:16 "And in the fourteenth day of the first month is the passover of the Lord."
Remember that the year starts at the Spring Vernal Equonix, that marks the first day of the year, and you count fourteen days after that day, and you have Passover. So why is this day so important to Christians? Because that is the day also that Jesus Christ became our Passover, when he went to the cross to become our sacrifice for sin for one and all times.
I Corinthians 5:7, 8 "Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:" [7] "Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth." [8]
Christians keep the Passover by following the instructions that Jesus gave us the night before He was crucified. We keep the Passover by our taking of the communion. There was a reason that YHVH demanded the the sacrifice lamb be perfect, of the first year, and without spot or blemish. This would be our "ensample", the example in the Old Covenant, of the New Covenant that would come later. The sacrifice of these lambs and goats was merely a temporary covering for the permanent covering that would be offered to many, to all those would by faith repent in Jesus name and come under that covering for sin, the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus and his disciples were eating their last supper together on that night when Judas would betray him. After Judas departed the room, to go and meet with the Kenite Jewish leaders to betray Jesus:
Matthew 26:26 "And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body."
Jesus is giving us an example here as to how you and I, believers in Jesus Christ, were to remember His work at the cross. Did God expect any of us to go through what Jesus went through? No, He took the stripes so that we could be healed. Besides none of us are spotless and unblemished as He was, so there would be no way that flesh man could become that perfect sacrifice. Jesus took the bread, and He blessed it, and He offered that sacrifice to you personally, as He said; "Take, eat; this is My body." This bread from the communion table is what we take to remember the pain and suffering, and the stripes that He took for us.
Matthew 26:27 "And He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, "Drink ye all of it;"
The bread taken at that communion table is is not all that is necessary, for in they cup we are reminded of the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ that was shed for all those that come under that blood in repentance, and by Faith believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus took the cup, He gave thanks, and Jesus gave it to His disciples, all eleven of them, for one had departed their midst to betray our Lord.
Matthew 27:28 "For this is My blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."
Then Jesus tells us exactly why He took the cup, because it represented the blood of Jesus that would do away with that Old Covenant, that we are reading of this this chapter, that requires the blood of lambs and goats daily for sacrifice. The New Covenant or Testament is offered just one time. Once was sufficient, for in Christ was the perfect, unblemished sacrifice for one and all times.
Matthew 27:29 "But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's Kingdom."
However we are to continue with the bread and wine [cup] of communion until that day. There will come another time in this earth age, when many will be deceived and will stop taking the communion, for they will be deceived in believing that Satan the false rock, is Christ. That is the "Abomination of Desolation" Jesus spoke of in Matthew 24:15; "When ye shall therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:" Jesus warning to each of us was that we continue to take the communion table, the bread and the cup, until He is here with us in our heavenly Father's kingdom.
That kingdom comes after the seventh trump, after we are no longer in our flesh and blood bodies, for at the seventh trump we will instantly be changed into our incorruptible bodies as the angels have. So my friend, as long as you are in your flesh body, you keep taking the communion. If anyone tells you that he is God, and you are still in your flesh body, that person is a fake, even if he is doing supernatural things. Remember that Satan is supernatural in his angelic form, yet God will give to him the supernatural powers, and the authority to use those powers to do what he does to fool all the people of this world, all except of course the Elect. Those with the truth sealed away in their minds, where no can man take that wisdom from them.
Numbers 28:17 "And in the fifteenth day of this month is the feast: seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten."
This feast is called the "feast of unleavened bread". Today our bread of life is Jesus Christ, and we keep this feast every day of the year. We do not keep this leaven of malice and wickedness, with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Remember when Jesus had just fed the five thousand, and he instructed his disciples to go around and pick up the unused bread. This was a lesson to the disciples.
Matthew 16:11 "How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?"
Matthew 16:12 "Then understood they how that He bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees."
It is not the leaven in bread that we ought to be concerned with, but the false doctrine and traditions of men that creep into what we are studying in our church houses. This is just as true today as it was in Jesus day. If you are studying the Word and sealing it away in your mind, don't be concerned with getting the leaven out of your house that may get into the bread you eat. The leaven that should cause us concern is false doctrines that men teach as the truth, when it is a lie.
Numbers 28:18 "In the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no manner of servile work therein:"
The feast of unleavened bread goes on for seven days, and in the first day of that period of time it shall be a holy convocation. It shall be given fully to the things of the Lord. There shall be no servile or laboring work, for this day was given to an assembly of all the people [holy convocation]. During that day, the people came together, and the priests would read the law to the people all day long. Most churches today cover two verses or so, and listen to a man ramble on for the hour on everything but the law. This was to happen at every one of the major feast days. This was also done on the seventh day of this feast of unleavened bread.
Numbers 28:19 "But ye shall offer a sacrifice made by fire for a burnt offering unto the Lord; two young bullocks, and one ram, and seven lambs of the first year: they shall be unto you without blemish:"
Notice that this feast of unleavened bread required the same sacrifices as on the first day of each month's sacrifices. The fact that these animals to be sacrificed were to be without blemish, is a type for Jesus Christ, for Jesus was perfect and without blemish in all manner. Jesus had no sin.
Numbers 28:20 "And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil: three tenth deals shall ye offer for a bullock, and two tenth deals for one ram;"
Leviticus 2:1 states that this "Michah" is also the meal offering, and is not necessary to secure admittance, but to secure favor. Its a gift from the one that is offering it to YHVH. Remember also that the flour must be the pure fine flour, for it was a type of Christ. The oil, Olive oil, for the oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit. The amount of the flour and the oil again depends on the number and size of the animals to be sacrificed. Anything that is offered up to YHVH our Heavenly Father, you can find a type in it for Jesus Christ.
Numbers 28:21 "A several tenth deal shalt thou offer for every lamb, throughout the seven lambs:"
The word "several", means "single or separate tenth". For each lamb offered, one tenth deal of olive oil shall be offered with it.
Numbers 28:22 "And one goat for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you."
Sin offerings were given to atone for sin. The sin offering, which this would have been, were for the entire congregation, and not to be eaten by the priests. However if a person brought his own sin offering to be sacrificed, then the priest could have eaten of those part that were assigned to them. To review these offerings in detail, go back to Leviticus chapters 1-5, which covers each of these offerings in detail.
Numbers 28:23 "Ye shall offer these beside the burnt offering in the morning, which is for a continual burnt offering."
This is also a reminder that each of these offerings were to be given in addition to all the other offerings that were required by God; the daily sacrifice, the Sabbaths, the months, the Paschal and the firstfruits. The daily morning sacrifice came first, then these other would follow in their order required by the law.
Numbers 28:24 "After this manner ye shall offer daily, throughout the seven days, the meat of the sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord: it shall be offered beside the continual burnt offering, and his drink offering."
So at this feast of unleavened bread, we have a total of 14 bullocks, 7 rams, 49 lambs, and 7 goats to be sacrificed on the altar. Notice that all of these sacrifices are multiples of 7; which in biblical numerics is symbolic for spiritual completeness.
Numbers 28:25 "And on the seventh day ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work."
So just as on the first day of the feast of unleavened bread, no work is to be done, and the entire congregation shall meet for the day and listen to the law being read by the priest, and eat, have a feast.
Numbers 28:26 "Also in the day of the firstfruits, when ye bring a new meat offering unto the Lord after your weeks be out, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work:"
Then too, on the evening of your weeks feast days, you shall also have a holy convocation, and do not servile work. This even restricted their food preparation, which had to be done prior to the time of the feast of weeks.
What the "one the eve of the weeks" was referring to; they were to count from the first Sabbath of the feast of unleavened bread, seven weeks, that of course is forty nine days, and this was the eve of the fiftieth day, which was Pentecost. This was very important to us in New Testament time.
Acts 2:1 "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place."
All the Christians that were in Jerusalem came together for a holy convocation, and they were of one accord, in one place. They came together because Jesus told them to be there in Acts 1:4, and stay in Jerusalem.
Acts 2:2 "And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting."
Jesus made a promise to His disciples in John 14:14-17; If ye shall ask any thing in My name, I will do it." [14] "If ye love Me, Keep My commandments," [15] "And I pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever;" 16]
Jesus did not what His disciples scattered any more that Moses wanted the children of Israel scattered when he knew that he would soon die. Jesus came for the purpose of living the unblemished life and being our sacrifice, while the Holy Spirit of God came here to these disciples for the first time to be their comforter, to lead and direct their lives after Jesus Christ ascended into heaven.
John 14:17 "Even the Spirit of truth; Whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you."
Only those naming the name of Christ can have the Comforter, the Spirit of truth, for it is the Holy Spirit that reveals all truth in their minds. It is the Holy Spirit that opens minds to understanding, and closes minds to those that it is not intended to reach. When you accept the Lord Jesus Christ, then the Holy Spirit enters into you, and He will be there to guide you through your life.
Acts 2:3 "And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as the fire, and it sat upon each of them."
Many try to copy tongues, but it comes out nothing but confusion, but when the time comes for these tongues to be spoken, every person on the face of the earth will hear this tongue of the Holy Spirit and understand it in the dialect of their neighborhood that they grew up in. There will be no confusion, nor need of an interpreter.
So do you get it? The day of the feast of firstfruits, is what we call Pentecost. It was ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven; The fiftieth day after Passover when Christ went to the cross and died, and that is the day that the Holy Spirit came to dwell with and in man. This is also know as the feast of weeks or the feast of harvest.
Numbers 28:27 "But ye shall offer the burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the Lord; two young bullocks, one ram, seven lambs of the first year;"
This offering was in addition to all the other offerings that were required by God under the blood ordinances of the law. These were to be made before the wave offerings yet after the daily offerings.
Numbers 28:28 "And their meat offering of flour mingled with oil, three tenths deals unto one bullock, two tenth deals unto one ram,"
Numbers 28:29 "A several tenth deal unto one lamb, throughout the seven lambs;"
Numbers 28:30 "And one kid of the goats, to make an atonement for you."
The word "you" used here is
in reference to the entire congregation, which had met for this holy
convocation. Numbers 28:31 "Ye shall offer them beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, (they shall be unto you without blemish) and their drink offerings."
As a reminder this last verse tells us that each of these offerings had to be given separate from each other, in their proper order, and one animal could not represent an offering of a different sacrifice. The daily sacrifice had to be met first, then the Sabbath offering on each Sabbath day, then on the first day of each month, the months offering, then the firstfruits on the day of Pentecost. And each of these animals given in sacrifice had to be without spot or blemish.
