Chapter 29

"Particular: re Seventh Month (Tisri)."
"The Eight Designated Days of the Seventh Month."

In this chapter of Numbers, it is talking about the offerings of the seventh month, and the feast days are all arranged with the number seven. Seven days between the weekly Sabbath, then on Tisri, the seventh month is called the Sabbath month. And every seventh year is called the Sabbatical year, when the farmers were to allow their land to rest from all crops. However in the sixth year, God promised that he would give a triple crop, enough to feed them in the sixth, seventh and eighth year, to cover that time period until there could be another harvest. Seven seven year periods is called the Jubilee period, for the fifth years is the Jubilee, the time when any person has the right to redeem his inheritance property back, but there was a cost to redeem that land.

Leviticus 27:17, 18 "If he sanctify his field from the year of jubile, according to thy estimation it shall stand." [17] "But if he sanctify his field after the jubile, then the priest shall reckon unto him the money according to the years that remain, even unto the year of the jubile, and it shall be abated from thy estimation." [18]

So Jubilee was the year when by law, everything was set back to the day that the inheritance was given to each man by lot. God established the inheritance to each man that was numbered, that he was entitled to a portion of land for his or her inheritance. The land that was assigned to say the tribe of Judah; if it had been rented or given away through marriage, could be redeemed back into the family or tribe that inherited it, but only in the year of jubilee. By law the land returned back to the man, or woman that drew the lot for the land when Joshua, Eleaser, and the appointed leader from that tribe first made the inheritance. This also applied to an Israelite that was sold into bondage, for on the year of Jubilee, all bondage ended.

In the year of jubilee all debts were forgiven, and all bondage was done away with, as things were set back in the order that they were, in that year that God established those rights of inheritance. So this seventh month is very important in light of the year of jubilee and all the happenings that are going on around that month and year.

Numbers 29:1 "And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you."

Again this seventh month is called Tisri. So this entire month is set aside where there shall be no servile work preformed. The "holy convocation" is when all the people come together for the purpose of hearing the law being read to each person, but the priests. And at day break on that first day of the month, that mounth will be announced by blowing all the trumpets. This starts the feast day called the "feast of the trumpets." Then on the fifteenth day of the seventh month [Tisri] God declared another feast day, the "feast of the tabernacles".

Leviticus 23:33, 34 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying," [33] "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, `The fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of Tabernacles for seven days." [34]

So we see that in that this seventh month annually would be "the feast of months", with a second feast taking place in the middle of the month, the "feast of tabernacles". The month is announced to the people by the blowing of the trumpets, and the people then know that this feast time has begun.

Numbers 29:2 "And ye shall offer a burnt offering for a sweet savour unto the Lord; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year without blemish:"

So on this first day of the month, beside the other offerings that are to be made, the daily sacrifices of morning and evening, the Sabbath sacrifice, and any other covered under the law, this offering sacrifice of "the feast of the months" had to be made also. And of course as a type of Christ, the animals that were sacrificed must be without spot or blemish.

Numbers 29:3 "And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals for a bullock, and two tenth deals for a ram,"

Here again is the "Minchah" or meat or meal offering, which as such is given as a gift offering to secure favor with the Lord.

Numbers 29:4 "And one tenth deal for one lamb, throughout the seven lambs:"

In chapter 28 it read several tenth deal, here it reads "one tenth deal" of flour for each of the seven lambs to be sacrificed. This then is the same offering that was designated for each day of an ordinary month. So we see that this is increased for this seventh month.

Numbers 29:5 "And one kid of the goats for a sin offering, to make an atonement for you:"

This sacrifice offering for sin is talking about an offering that was given for each person within the congregation, including the priests. On the first day of the month of Tishri, this offering was required in addition to the sacrifice required for each month of the year. this day of atonement is discussed in Leviticus 16, whereby two goats are brought in before the priest, and the Lord's lot is cast and fell on the one that would be offered in a sin offering to the Lord. The blood of that first goat was placed on the second goat, called the scapegoat, who was then released outside the camp and into the wilderness. It would be good to review that whole chapter.

Numbers 29:6 "Beside the burnt offering of the month, and this meat offering, and the daily burnt offering, and his meat offering, and their drink offerings, according unto their manner, for a sweet savour, a sacrifice made by fire unto the Lord."

Here again it is reminded us that this offering was in addition to all those other offerings that we talked about in our study of Numbers 28. They were given as required by the law, in the manner written, and made as a pleasing savour given by fire to YHVH. The aroma would be made by fire and ascend up to the Father.

Numbers 29:7 "And ye shall have on the tenth day of this seventh month an holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall not do any work therein:"

On the tenth day of Tishri, is another feast day, for all the people will be gathered in this holy convocation, to be read the law, and make the required sacrifices under the law. Each person is to "afflict your soul", or humble your soul before the Lord. Today we call it getting right before the Lord, and it is done when we repent our sins to the Lord, in Jesus name. When we say, "in Jesus name", we are recognizing the fact that it was the blood of Christ, not the blood of some animal that allows our sins to be taken from us. Our sins are put under the blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus that was shed on the cross of Calvary.

Leviticus 23:27 "Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement: it shall be an holy convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord."

This day was a humbling day for the assembling of the entire congregation, for it marks "the day of atonement". All the people being gathered together at the tabernacle, listen to the Words of the Lord being read back to them, and our offerings made today to the Lord is when you and I tell the Lord of our love for Him. No work would be done on this day, for it was a day for listening, prayer, and eating.

Numbers 29:8 "But ye shall offer a burnt offering unto the Lord for a sweet savour; one young bullock, one ram, and seven lambs of the first year; they shall be unto you without blemish:"

Keep in mind that the sacrifices listed here are to be given in addition to the other sacrifices that are also required to be made on this day, as given in Leviticus 16. Of course, as a type of Christ, they must be without blemish for the sacrifice.

This day of Atonement was the only day that the High Priest was allowed to enter into the Holy of holies, to make that sacrifice of atonement for himself and for all the people.

Leviticus 16:32, 33 "And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:" [32] "And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation." [33]

This takes place after the scape goat has been set free in the wilderness, for the atonement is for all parts of the congregation, then comes that one time event.

Leviticus 16:34 "And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins once a year." And he [the high priest] did as the Lord commanded Moses."

This day of atonement for the sins of the people was a temporary covering for the sins committed in the prior year, up to this tenth day of Tishri. This covenant of blood ordinance is the old covenant, but when Christ went to the cross and shed His blood, God entered into a New Covenant with His people, and today we are not covered under the blood of lambs and goats, but under the blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. These things that we are reading of here in Numbers are earthly things, all made and done with hands. Remember that without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sin. The Apostle Paul discusses this in Hebrews 9:23.

Hebrews 9:23 "It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these."

The shedding of blood of animals was necessary, that we are reading of here in Numbers, because God demanded it. Though the blood of these unblemished animals was pure, it was only a temporary covering for one year. In time God would give the pure sacrifice direct from heaven, in the life's blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 9:24 "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:"

At the moment of our Lord's death on the cross, the veil that separated God from man was rent in two, and the way was provided for you and I to go directly to the YHVH our heavenly Father. The Holy of holies, and all the instruments within it, along with the ark of the covenant were all made by the hands of men. However, at the death of Jesus Christ those methods of blood ordinances are done away with and fulfilled in Christ. Jesus Christ then became our advocate before our Heavenly Father, and we no longer need a man to enter into the Holy of holies.

Hebrews 9:25 "Nor yet that He should offer Himself often as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others;"

The reason that the High priest even entered into the holy of holies once each year was to offer the blood of animals to God, that goat that the lot fell upon, when the scapegoat was selected by God.

Hebrew 9:26 "For then must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself,"

Each soul is required to come to earth and partake or be born into these flesh bodies. That soul of the individual was placed into the embryo of its mother at the time of conception, and was born through the womb, and given the breath of life. Because God required it of each soul, Jesus Christ did the same also, as His Soul and Spirit entered the embryo of the Virgin Mary, and nine months later was born into our earth age of flesh man. Each person in their flesh body came into this earth age of flesh age the same way, and Jesus Christ also became flesh and blood just as you and I are. However we came into this world to make a choice between God's Way, or Satan's way.

Satan is out to destroy all mankind, and Jesus' purpose for entering this age as a flesh man was to destroy Satan and his plans.

Hebrews 2:14 "Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same; that through death He [Jesus Christ] might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil."

That is the stated purpose of Satan the devil, to destroy you. His ways look good and luring because Satan is out to deceive you: The devil wants your soul with him in hell fire. Satan's destruction is going to happen, but that appointed time will be after God has used Satan to test his children, you and I.

Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"

This fact you can count on, each soul that enters into a human body, will be tested, and then die; and after the death for this flesh, each soul will stand before God in judgment for their words and actions.

Hebrews 9:28 "So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin, unto salvation."

Unlike the many sacrifices and offerings that must be made each year under the blood ordinances of the Law, Jesus Christ's blood was sufficient to be offered once, for all times. Was that blood offered for every one? No, it was offered for only those many dear souls that have the faith to believe in Jesus Christ, and by God's grace they reach out and receive that gift that our Lord so willingly offered to those that would believe on Him.

John 3:16, 17 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." [16] "For God sent not His Son into the the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved." [17]

This is the purpose of Jesus entering into this earth age of flesh man, and suffering the cross in death. He became the perfect, unblemished sacrifice, and then went to the cross to be offered up for the sins of only those that would believe on Him, and take the give through repentance that he offered to each of us. You either take it or refuse it.

John 3:18 "He that believeth on Him [Jesus Christ] is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

My friend, when you approach our Heavenly Father, this is exactly how we are to approach Him: "..in the name of the only begotten Son of God", and that name is Jesus the Christ; "In Jesus name". So these offerings on the day of Atonement that we are reading of in Numbers 29, were all fulfilled in Jesus sacrificial death on the cross.

Numbers 29:9 "And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals to a bullock, and two tenth deals to one ram,"

So when the high priest entered into the holy of holies, he had a bell tied to his garments so if the sacrifice was not sufficient, God would strike him dead. These instructions were followed in detail, so that God would accept this once a year sacrifice.

Numbers 29:10 "And several tenth deal for one lamb, throughout the seven lambs:"

Numbers 29:11 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the sin offering of atonement, and the continual burnt offering, and the meat offering of it, and their drink offerings."

This verse also calls attention to the fact that each of the offerings that were required by the ordinances of the law must be met in addition to this offering for Atonement. There were offerings that Aaron the high priest had to make for himself before he entered into the holy of holies, as well as the continual burnt offering, the meat offering, and the drink offerings for that day. The sin offering that is referred to here was to mark the scapegoat that would be set free, and the the lot of the urim would fall on goat that would be killed and offered to the Lord for the sins of the people for that past year. The scapegoat would be carrying the sins of the people off into the wilderness, away from their camp and the people that committed them.

Numbers 29:12 "And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days;"

Verses twelve through thirty four deals with "the feast of tabernacles", that start on the fifteenth day of the month of Tishri. This feast day is also know as the "feast of booths" or "succoths". There are a lot of duties to be done in this seventh month. The reason for this feast day was to remind the children of Israel of their exodus from the land of Egypt. Their first place of encampment was at Succuth. The Passover was on the night of the fourteenth, and on the fifteenth, then left the city of Ramesis in hast, as is recorded in Exodus 12:37. The went to Succoth and pitched their tents or makeshift booths, to put order to their movement. This feast day then is to remind the children of Israel, all the tribes, of those days coming out of Egypt.

Exodus 12:37, 38 "And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, beside children." [37] "And a mixed multitude went up also with them: and flocks and herds, even very much cattle." [38]

The Egyptians wanted the Israelites out of their country, and fast, as they buried their dead firstborn sons. The Egyptians gave them cattle, and herds of sheep, gold and silver, just to get rid of them. Then at their camp site at Succoth we read.

Exodus 12:39 "And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt, for it was not leavened; because they were thrust out of Egypt, and could not tarry, neither had they prepared for themselves any victual."

So as we read through this time of the feast of tabernacles or booths, keep in mind that it time that this feast was representing, for God did not want the children of Israel to forget any of it. These booths reminded them of the protection provided by the Lord, and grace that God had shown to them at that time. This was a time of great joy, and to meditate on the grace and promises that God had given to them. On the first day they had a holy convocation, where all the people came together to read and study the Words God gave to them.

Numbers 29:13 "And ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire of the sweet savour unto the Lord; thirteen young bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year; they shall be without blemish:"

Notice the increase in number of animals that would be used in this sacrifice, and it showed the intensity that the Lord expected from the people. This was a time to celebrate for all the harvest would have been brought in, and the peoples minds could concentrate fully on the Lord.

Numbers 29:14 "And their meat offering shall be of flour mingled with oil, three tenth deals unto every bullock of the thirteen bullocks, two tenths deals to each ram of the two rams,"

Numbers 29:15 "And a several tenth deal to each lamb of the fourteen lambs:"

Numbers 29:16 "And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Notice here again that all these offerings were in addition to all the other offerings that were required under the law for that day and time. As they progressed though the week, each day, the number of bullocks that are offered in sacrifice will be one less than the prior day. The next verses through verse 34 deals with this time of the feast of tabernacles, starting with the fifteenth day of the seventh month, and continuing through the week.

Numbers 29:17 "And on the second day ye shall offer twelve young bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without spot:"

Numbers 29:18 "And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Numbers 29:19 "And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and the meat offering thereof, and their drink offerings."

Numbers 29:20 "And on the third day eleven bullocks, two rams, fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:"

Numbers 29:21 "And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Numbers 29:22 "And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Numbers 29:23 "And on the fourth day ten bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:"

Numbers 29:24 "Their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Numbers 29:25 "And one kid of the goats for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Numbers 29:26 "And on the fifth day nine bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without spot:"

Numbers 29:27 "And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Numbers 29:28 "And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Numbers 29:29 "And on the sixth day eight bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:"

Numbers 29:30 "And their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner."

Numbers 29:31 "And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Numbers 29:32 "And on the seventh day seven bullocks, two rams, and fourteen lambs of the first year without blemish:"

Numbers 29:33 "And their meat offering and their drink offering for the bullocks, for the rams, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Numbers 29:34 "And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, his meat offering, and his drink offering."

It is interesting to note that over the feast of tabernacles, 70 bullocks would have been sacrificed; This is five times the number offered at Passover and Pentecost. There were 14 rams, which is double the number offered then; and 98 lambs, also doubled from Passover and Pentecost, as well as the seven goats. Each of these numbers are multiples of the number seven. Remember feasts themselves are set up on the number seven, and the number of sacrifices offered on those days also to the number seven. This all is pointing to the number for Divine completeness, seven.

Numbers 29:35 "One the eighth day ye shall have a solemn assembly: ye shall do no servile work therein:"

So this eighth day, that first day following the seven days of the feast of Succoths, God called for this solemn assemble of the congregation, to come together, and humbly seek the Lord. However there is one other event that will follow the feast of Tabernacle, and that is the gathering of all the people to this solemn assembly before going back to their homes and continuing with their lives.

Numbers 29:36 "But ye shall offer a burnt offering, a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord: one bullock, one ram, seven lambs of the first year without blemish:"

This offering would be just like those offerings that were offered on the first day of the feast of trumpets. That offering was called for the first day of the seventh month, right along with the other offerings and sacrifice that the law required for that day.

Numbers 29:37 "There meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullock, for the ram, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:"

Just as was stated before, each offering must be given on the day that it was required under the law, and in the manner that God instructed it to be made. No sacrifice is to be given, taking the place of another sacrifice, but each in the order it was prescribed, with the number of animals that the sacrifice required. With this feast there would be no more feasts to the Lord for this year's cycle.

Numbers 29:38 "And one goat for a sin offering; beside the continual burnt offering, and his meat offering, and his drink offering."

Numbers 29:39 "These things ye shall do unto the Lord in your set feasts, beside your vows, and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, and for your meat offerings, and for your drink offerings, and for your peace offerings."

The feasts offerings are required by God under the law, but these other offerings; the vows, freewill, burnt, meat and drinks offerings are not required by give in Love and thanks-giving for the Father, for they are all voluntary by the person.

Numbers 29:40 "And Moses told the children of Israel according to all that the Lord commanded Moses."

Every word of instruction that YHVH gave to Moses, Moses wrote them down and told the people of those commands.
