Numbers

Chapter 36

"Heiresses. [1 - 12]"

This is the final chapter of the book of Numbers, and it deals with the law of the marriage of an heiress, however it is heiresses in this case because there are five daughter that are seeking justice and their portion of land for inheritance, because there were no sons born to their father, Zelophehad. So this chapter is a continuation of Numbers 26:33; during the second numbering of the men over the age of 20. The numbering was necessary for the reforming of the army, as that generation of their fathers were all dead and buried in the wilderness.

Numbers 26:33 "And Zelophehad the son of Helpher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Holglah, Milcah, and Tirzah."

The father of these five daughters was numbered as required by God in that first numbering, and he lost his life in battle, and earned the right to claim a possession in the promise land, however, he had no sons. The right of inheritance went to the sons, and when there was no son in the family, then this presented a problem that was not covered in the law. When Moses went to God for instruction, God told him that these daughter would have the right to claim their father's inheritance, as there were no sons to claim it. So by this act, another problem came up, and that is which tribe would be able to claim the land of these girls inheritance for taxation, when they would marry outside their tribe? These daughters were of the tribe of Manasseh, and the elders are coming to Moses to resolve the problem for over time each of the tribal areas could be riddled with other tribes claiming the land that was in the possession of the tribe of Manasseh.

Numbers 36:1 "And the chief father of the families of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spake before Moses, and before the princes, the chief fathers of the children of Israel:"

Moses is about to die, very shortly, and this is a problem that all the tribes will face in time. This family of Zelophehad was of the tribe of Manasseh, and this family had located east of the Jordan river, in the city of Gilead, of the half tribe of Manasseh that would be settled east of the Jordan. The head of the tribe of Manasseh went before the princes of all the tribes and presented this problem to them. Remember that the land is suppose to remain in the inheritance of the families of the fathers and tribe that it was assigned to.

Numbers 36:2 "And they said, "The Lord commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the children of Israel: and my lord was commanded by the Lord to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother unto his daughters."

Remember from Genesis 17:8 That this land that was given to these tribes was to be an everlasting possession and never taken from the family that inherited it. It was directed to sons, but now there has to be a ruling dealing with these five daughters.

Leviticus 25:10 "And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you, and ye shall return everyt man unto his family."

In other words, the land was to be returned and remain in the family and tribe that it was first assigned to by lot, which means by God Himself. This command to give the land to Zelophehad's five daughters, in Numbers 27:7 "The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto thm. " So this set up the law that would follow.

Numbers 27:8 "And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, `If a man die, and have no son, then ye shall cause his inheritance to pass unto his daughter."

This gave the daughters the right to seek their inheritance and receive it. Now for the problem.

Numbers 36:3 "And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then shall their inheritance be taken from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be put to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken from the lot of our inheritance."

So if these daughters marry into another tribe, and she has sons by her husband of that other tribe. Then when she has children by that man, her son is considered a son of that other tribe. The right of taxation and possession in this case, then moves from the tribe of Manasseh, to the tribe of her husband that she married into. So the land itself would be taken from the lot of Manasseh, and given over to that other tribes inheritance.

Numbers 36:4 "And when the jubile of the children of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be put unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers." "

The jubile come around on the fiftieth year, then all land returns to the family that received it as an inheritance. The tribe of Manasseh would then lose land every fifty years, as would all the other tribes that had daughters marrying into other tribes, when there were no sons in the family. These leaders of Manasseh wanted a ruling on this matter. Say there were no children born to the marriage, then the land would automatically go over to the tribe of the husband, and his family's inheritance.

Numbers 36:5 "And Moses commanded the children of Israel according to the word of the Lord, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph hath said well."

Moses acknowledged; These men of Manasseh have said right, this is exactly what would happen. Remember Joseph had two sons, and he received the double blessing when Jacob adopted each, and the blessings of Abraham would be passed on to each of these sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.

Numbers 36:6 "This is the thing which the Lord doth command concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, `Let them marry to whom they think best: only to the family of the tribe of their father shall they marry."

This is the judgment by God through Moses to deal with this matter. Let these girls marry to whom ever they want, but only from of the tribe that they belong. Then if it goes into his family, the inheritance stays the same.

Numbers 36:7 "So shall not the inheritance of the children of Israel remove from tribe to tribe: for every one of his children of Israel shall keep himself to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers."

Moses is saying here that every one within the tribes of Israel shall cleave or marry into the tribe that they belong, or were born into.

We saw in Esau's case, he had no respect at all for the inheritance that was given to him, and sold it for a bowl of soup. For this we know that God loved Jacob, and hated Esau. It is important to God what we think and do with our inheritance.

Numbers 36:8 "And every daughter, that possessth an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may enjoy every man the inheritance of his fathers."

Any heiress in any tribe of Israel, shall be the wife or married into the family of the tribe of her father. In this way the inheritance land will always remain within the family of her father.

Numbers 36:9 "Neither shall the inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; but every one of the tribes of the children of Israel shall keep himself to his own inheritance."

This then would pass on to every generation in the future.

Numbers 36:10 "Even as the Lord commanded Moses so did the daughters of Zelophehad:"

In time each of the five daughters of Zelophehad did marry men of the tribe of Manasseh.

Numbers 36:11 "For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons:"

Each of these girls married their sons of their father's bothers. Of course this kept all of the inheritance within the family of Manasseh.

Numbers 36:12 "And they were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father."

They married to sons that were of their family.

Numbers 36:13 "These are the commandments and the judgments, which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho."

This ends the book of Numbers, which is a record of the children of Israel from the first day of the second month, after they departed out of Egypt on their way to the promise land. There were many trials along the way, and the adult generation that depart out of land of Egypt, that witnessed the Passover of the death angel that claimed the life of the firstborn of man and animal in Egypt, all died along the way, except for Joshua and Caleb.

We started this book out with I Corinthians 10:1-12, where the Apostle Paul reminded us that these things that we read about here in Numbers, were all given to us living in these end times as warnings as to how it shall be in our generation.

I Corinthians 10:1, 2 "Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;" [1] "And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;" [2]

Paul went on to describe all those things both good and bad that took place during that forty years in the wilderness. Then he points to those times of idolaty that the people fell into, and the acts of lust and evil that the many of the children of Israel took part in. He said that these were example of what our generation would witness in our day.

I Corinthians 10:11 "Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."

"Ensamples" are "examples" of what we are to look out for and be aware of in our generation. They were given back then and written down by Moses as a warning to you and I, who are living in the latter days of this earth age. We have the entire Scripture detailing of how the end of this earth age will come to a close, and we are to seal those truths from the Scripture away in our minds so we will not be deceived by Satan. Each of these events are types that we are to learn from, for God has shown his anger or happiness from the actions of the children as they were on their way to the promise land. Our promise land it the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ at the seventh trump, and Lord expects His children [the bide of Christ] to remain true to Him, and be presented to Jesus as a chased virgin spiritually. We saw that at times when the children of Israel were tested, the failed the test, and went fornicating after other gods, and partaking in other religions as prostitutes.

I Corinthians 10:12 "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall."

You have the lessons here, and we need to apply these warnings to our lives. Don't do as the children of Israel did, in rebelling against God, and tempting YHVH as they did. When God asks you to do something and by His Word you know you are expected to fulfill a duty to him, on that day when you are called up to be a witness, speak out, and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you. That is the purpose for the elect in these last days of this earth age, as recorded in Mark 13:9-11.

Remember that when that generation refused to act and trust God, and go into the promise land, that whole generation died off in the wilderness. When Satan comes to this earth with all is fallen angels, the entire world will be taken in by his supernatural powers and lies, and will go whoring after him. Balaam set the lustful traps with the women of the Midianites, and 24,000 fell into that trap. Satan will set his traps also, and many Christians that do not know the Word will think that Satan is God, and go chasing just as the men followed after the women that Balaam sent their way. The point to this entire book is for you and I to take is as a warning for our every day lives, and wake up to the things that are going on around us. The Israelites had their choice and many took the wrong direction; and we also have a choice today, whether we will prepare ourselves for entering into the promise land of our Lord's kingdom, or spiritually die in the wilderness of this generation.

The choice is yours, when you do things God's way the blessings come, and when you do not do things God's way, the curses come, and there are no blessings.
