Chapter 7

"Dedication of the Altar arangement. [4 - 9]"
"The Arrangement. [11 - 89]"

Numbers 7:1 "And it came to pass on the day that Moses had fully set up the tabernacle, and had anointed it, and sanctified it, and all the instruments thereof, both the altar and all the vessels thereof, and had anointed them, and sanctified them."

This time setting that is taking place for the dedication of the Altar was set in Numbers 1:1 "And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt," God established that the year of this Hebrew Calendar would begin at the Spring Vernal Equinox each year. Then on the fourteenth day after the beginning of the year, the death angel passed over Egypt, and claimed the life of the firstborn of each family, of both man and beast. This was the tenth plague that God brought on Egypt, to force Pharaoh to "Let My people go."

The next morning, Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and on the fifteenth day of the year, of the month of Abib, the Children of Israel gathered their goods and the wealth that the Egyptians had given them, and they headed out for the promise land of Canaan. God opened the Red Sea for them to cross over on dry ground, and they turned south and traveled to the base of Mount Sinai.

Moses had made many trips up on the mount where God gave Him instructions of the Laws and Statutes that His people were to follow, and along with the instructions were the details for the building of the Tabernacle, the Altar, and all the instruments and furniture that were to be part of God's house, the Tabernacle. So now by the end of the second year, the Passover celebrations over, the tabernacle and all that goes with it being completed; it's time for the dedication of the Altar of God, where all the sacrifice would take place. This chapter then tells us of that dedication of the Altar of God where the children of Israel, all the tribes of Israel would bring their sacrifice offerings to present to the Lord YHVH.

So we will now see the dedication offerings of the tribe princes to God, upon the completion of the sanctuary. Sure these things are history, but the Apostle Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 10:1-12 that all these things happened as a warning, an example to us living today in this end generation of the parable of the fig tree. Exodus 25 through 31, dealt with all the preparation that had to be finished before this dedication could take

place. It took a lot of work by a lot of people to follow the instructions that God gave, to prepare this sanctuary.

Numbers 7:2 "That the princes of Israel, heads of the house of their fathers, who were the princes of the tribes, and were over them that were numbered, offered:"

In Numbers chapter two God took all the children of Israel and arranged them according to their tribes, and numbered the men to build His Army. At that time God established a head or prince of each of the tribes. These princes are both the generals of that tribes army [princes of the twelve tribes], and it will be each of these princes that are going to bring their offerings to be given to the Lord.

Numbers 7:3 "And they brought their offering before the Lord, six covered wagons, and twelve oxen; a wagon for two of the princes, and for each one an ox: and they brought them before the tabernacle."

This cost for delivering one wagon would be shared by two tribes, but each tribe prince would give one ox to pull the wagons. The moving of the tent, the panels, the sockets, the furniture, and all that goes to set up the tabernacle of the children of Israel, were the responsibility of the sons of Merarites and Gershonites, the sons of Aaron, and these carts or covered wagons were given for that purpose. These covered wagon were much like the covered wagons that brought our forefather across the frontier of our land, America, when they moved west to establish our land. There were many more oxen given to the Tabernacle, but all the others were given to be sacrificed.

Numbers 7:4 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,"

Numbers 7:5 " "Take it of them, that they [the covered wagons with their oxen] may be to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; and thou shalt give them unto the Levites, to every man according to his service." "

God is instructing Moses that these six wagons and twelve oxen were for the purpose of service, for work that the Merarites and Gershonites would need to move the tabernacle parts when the tribes were on the move. Those heavy panels, the pillars, and the many yards of canvas were just to heavy to carry, and these wagons were for that service.

Numbers 7:6 "And Moses took the wagons and the oxen, and gave them unto the Levites."

Remember that it would be the responsibility of the Merarite and Gershonite Levites to pack up, and move to reset up the Tabernacle while the children of Israel migrated through the wilderness. This would be a forty year journey. The children of Israel had been only two years and two months for their time of bondage, and out of Egypt.

Numbers 7:7 "Two wagons and four oxen he gave unto the sons of Gershon, according to their service:"

This family of Gershon numbered seven thousand five hundred males in the family, and their duties or charge is given in Numbers 3:25, 26. These people were responsible for the Tent, curtains and covering, and the door of the Tabernacle. They set up and took down the hangings of the court, and the cords that held the tabernacle together.

Numbers 7:8 "And four wagons and eight oxen he gave unto the sons of Merari, according unto their service, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest."

Though the Gershonites received two wagons for the tent and its coverings, the Merarites, and their leader Ithamar received four wagons and eight oxen for their duties. Their charge requirement are given in Numbers 3:36, 37, and required much heavier equipment to be transported. They moved and set up the wooden boards of the fences of the tabernacle, the bars, and pillars along with the sockets and earthen vessels of the tabernacle. It required more wagons for the Merarites.

Remember also that all the tribes were required to submit all the males from age 20 to 50 that were able to fight, to be soldiers if and when it became necessary to defend their nation. This requirement was not demanded of the sons of Levi and the offspring of Aaron, for their duties completely was the setting up, and taking down of the Tabernacle, and the duties of the priests for the rest of the tribes.

Numbers 7:9 "But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders [arms]."

The third group of Levites were the Kohathites, which numbered eight thousand six hundred males in the family. Their responsibility and charge were the instruments of worship within the Tabernacle. Numbers 3:31, 32 gives us their duties, and remember that these instruments were not to be placed on a cart, but carried on the shoulders of the men of the families of the Kohathites. These instruments included the Ark of the Covenant and Mercy seat, where God spoke to Moses and Aaron, and the table of Shewbread, the candlestick, and the altars and vessels of the sanctuary where the priest would minister to the people.

Exodus 25 describes how these items would be made to where they would loops where the staves or poles made out of shittem wood would run through, allowing these items to be carried by hand by these Kohathites. God gave specific instructions as to how these item were to be carried, and if these instructions were not followed, the disobedient soul would die. Pay special notice to his verse, for it was vital in the days of David, as recorded in II Samuel 6:3.

After the Philistines had won the war with the Israelites, they took the Ark of the covenant back to their land. In time, many years later and after much sickness and famine they wanted to get rid of the Ark, and send it back to the Israelites. Rather than have the priests of the sons of Kohath carry the Ark back, they built a cart for the ark of the covenant.

II Samuel 6:3 "And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart."

So these Israelites are taking their religious instructions from these heathen people as to the movement of the most precious thing that God gave the Israelites at that moment in time. God said, that the ark would be carried, yet Abinadab saw to it that this new cart would be used, with his two sons in front and back of the cart. Think of how this all looked, with king David, thirty thousand of the ranking of Israel, and the harps, psalteries, timbrels, and cornets and cymbals playing their music. As they stood in reverence before this ark passing by on this new wagon or cart.

II Samuel 6:6, 7 "And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark and God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it." [6] "And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God." [7]

Uzzah was the son of a Levite, and knew better. This whole ceremony was completely disrespectful of God's instructions for His judgment seat. YHVH was mad, and struck him dead right in front of everyone. The reason for bringing this up is that God has things that are very special to Him, and He doesn't like people to disregard His instructions. Sure the Philistines paid a dear price when they handled God's ark disrespectfully, but they were ignorant of God's ways and what they did. Not so with these Israelites, David, the priests and Levites that stood by, and all the people with them. They wanted to put on a show, and make it real religious and God would not stand for it. We see in verse nine that David finally took sense of himself that tried to please God. He did what God required to have the ark brought back.

Though these two stories of the Ark of the Covenant were some six hundred years apart, we see that God's Word was the same for Moses and for David. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, the veil at the temple was rent in two, and this ark of the covenant was not necessary, because Jesus became the unblemished sacrifice for one and all times. Yet God's laws and ways are the same, but the approach to the throne of God no longer goes through the ark of the covenant in the holy of holies. Each of us that have faith and believe in God's Word, approach the throne of God for forgiveness in the name of our Lord and Savior, our prayers are all in the name of Jesus the Christ.

God set the way to approach Him, and though we cannot see our Lord in person, we have the faith to follow His instructions. Jesus is that way and we can only come to the Father YHVH, by our faith and belief in Jesus Christ. That is "Grace", "God's riches given to you and me at Christ's Expense", because or our willingness to accept that gift sight unseen. There is no other way today, no not even through an ark, for at Christ's death that ark was fulfilled, just like the need for animal sacrifice.

Today the world is seeking ways to tie all religious forms into one neat package that all religions can rely on, and that just will not happen and please God at the same time. He set the pattern for worship, and the times and ways that it shall be done. In you are in His Way, and come through His Son Jesus Christ, you have the right of passage to the throne; If not, your just like David sitting before thirty thousand, passing the ark of the covenant by on a new cart. Man made carts look just like the man made traditions. They may look right to man, but they stink filth before God. When the cart shook, the ark was about to fall, and when men tried to save the ark on their traditions or wagons, God killed the man. All this to make one point; You do it God's Way completely, or you will pay a dear price.

Watch out for those new religions, for every one will lead to a dead end street. The heathen simply do not understand God's Ways, and the set out to please God by their own ways, traditions that they have devised to ease their consciences. There is a one world religious order that will be in place shortly, and the god that that heathen form will worship is Satan, their god. Again, my friend, these things are given and written in His Word as warnings to us living in this end generation.

Numbers 7:10 "And the princes offered for dedicating of the altar in the day that it was anointed, even the princes offered their offering before the altar."

These twelve offerings of these princes will be dedicated over a twelve day period. Because of the size of the sanctuary and the number of priests, it took some time.

Numbers 7:11 "And the Lord said unto Moses, "They shall offer their offering, each prince on his day, for the dedicating of the altar."

So each day a different prince would bring the offerings from his tribe to the tabernacle to be given in an offering to God. The prince that would represent his tribe would be the man anointed by Moses, as given in Chapter two. However before we continue, lets review these offerings that will be mentioned in this chapter.

The "Korban offering" (a gift) was a gift offering, or given by the person as an admittance to secure an audience, to see the face of the Superior. This offering was also called the "face offering". After the admittance has been given and the entrance has been made, then the real offering is given.

The "Burnt offering" is called the "Olah", meaning, "to cause to ascend" [as the flame and smoke ascend from the burning]. In the Greek it is called "holocausta", from where we get "holocaust". This offering conveys the meaning that the entire offering has been burnt.

The "Meal offering" called the "Minchah" in the Hebrew text, is a present as such. Thus this offering is not a gift to gain admittance, but to obtain a favor, once in the presence of the Superior. In Exodus and Leviticus it is also called the "Meat offering" and has the signification as a meal.

The "Peace offering" comes from the root "Shallam", which conveys the idea of peace on the grounds of perfection, and compensation or recompense. Thus is the considered a payment of vows or praises because of peace already enjoyed.

The "Sin offering" is called the Chattath, coming from the Hebrew word, "Chat`a". Meaning "to sin by coming short of, by missing the mark in sins of commission". In the "Piel offering" it means to purge from such sin, and in the "Olah offering", the blood went upward to heaven. In the "Chattah offering" the blood went downward and out from the altar. The Chattah was made outside the camp.

The "Trespass offering" is called the "Asam" and relates to sins of omission, which the "Chattath" relates to sins of commission for sin in general. The "Asam sin" is one committed in relation to Mosaic Law; sins of error arising from ignorance or negligence."

The Freewill offering" also called the "Nedabah offering", is given voluntary by its giver. It refers not to the nature or mode of the offering, but to the motive. It is given expecting nothing in return.

The "Heave offering", also called the "Terumah" is lifted on high in a presentation to our Heavenly Father, YHVH. The "Wave offering", or "Tenuphah" was different because it was waved to and fro, back and forth to be presented to the four corners of the earth.

The "Drink offering", or "Nesek" means to pour out, whereas the "Ishsheh offering" was any offering that was to be made by fire.

The last offering to be look at was the "Zebach", meaning "any offering slain". The proper name for a victim, slain and offered. The Hebrew name for Altar is "Misbeah", and it is derived from the same root, and denotes "the place of the slaughter".

So as we continue in this chapter, this should give you an understanding of those offerings that the princes of the tribes of Israel will be making over the next twelve days in the anointing of the Altar of God.

It is important for us to remember that these sacrifice offerings are fulfilled in the shed blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was the unblemished sacrifice that would willingly go to the cross, take the humilation without saying a word, and be killed for the sins of all those that would by faith believe in Him, and through repentance accept this gift that is given freely to all people in Jesus name.

Hebrews 10:6, 7 "In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin Thou hast had no pleasure." [6] "Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me) to do Thy will, O God." " [7]

Hebrews 10:8, 9 "Above when He said, "Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin Thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein;" which are offered by the law;" [8] "Then said He, "Lo I come to do Thy will, O God," He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second." [9]

Yes under the old or first covenant these sacrifices and offerings were necessary, but they were looking forward to the coming Messiah that would be sacrificed for all souls for all times. Jesus Christ would fulfill all the laws that were given by God to Moses that we are reading of, and that sacrifice would come some 1453 years after the law was given to Moses.

Hebrews 10:10 "By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all."

We are sanctified or set apart for the Father through the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. That Sacrifice is sufficient for all mankind that is born of woman, and will by faith accept this gift that is offered to you. The "first" or the blood sacrifice requirements are done away with the moment that Jesus gave up the Ghost on the cross, and instantly the new, or Salvation by faith through repentance, in Jesus Christ's blood became the second established in heaven by our heavenly Father.

Numbers 7:12 "And he that offered his offering the first day was Nahshon the son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah:"

"Nahshon" is the prince of Judah that David would come, as well as in the lineage of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Numbers 7:13 "And his offering was one silver charger, the weight thereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them were full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

This charger made of silver weighted about four and a half pounds, and held water, blood and the mixture of flour and olive oil for offerings: as well as a silver bowl weighing about two pounds.

There are a total of seven types of offerings, the first three are considered holy offerings; The thank offering, the firstborn, and the firstfruits offerings. There are four types of offerings that are considered very holy by God. These are the incense offering, the shewbread offering, the trespass offering, and the meat offering.

Numbers 7:14 "One spoon of ten shekels of God, full of incense:"

This spoon of incense would have been burned in the golden altar.

Numbers 7:15 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:16 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:17 "And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Nahshon the son of Amminadab."

So this would be twenty one animals from each tribal prince that are given to the sons of Aaron. So we see that two hundred and fifty two animals would be offered and this is why it would take twelve days to make all the sacrifice offerings. Numbers 7:11 notes goes over each of these offerings for you.

Numbers 7:18 "On the second day Nethaneel the son of Zuar, prince of Issachar, did offer:"

You will notice that from here to Numbers 7:83, each of the gifts given and offerings made by the princes of each tribe were identical. Same amount of silver, same number of animals, and same number of sacrifice offerings. Nethaneel made his offering on the second day, and so on for the twelve days. Think of the wood cutting that needed to be done for this huge number of animals to be burnt, the slaughtering of the animals, and the handing of the burnt remains. It took the twelve days to make these offerings.

Numbers 7:19 "He offered for his offering one silver charger, the weight whereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:20 "One spoon of gold of ten shekels, full of incense:"

Numbers 7:21 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:22 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:23 "And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Nethaneel the son of Zuar."

Numbers 7:27 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:28 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:30 "On the fourth day Elizur the son of Shedeur, prince of the children of Reuben, did offer:"

Numbers 7:31 "His offering was one silver charger of the weight of an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:42 "On the sixth day Eliasaph the son of Deuel, prince of the children of Gad, offered:"

Numbers 7:43 "His offering was one silver charger of the weight of an hundred and thirty shekels, a silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:66 "On the tenth day Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai, prince of the children of Dan, offered:"

Numbers 7:67 "His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:68 "One golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense:"

Numbers 7:69 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:70 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:71 "And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai."

Numbers 7:72 "On the eleventh day Pagiel the son of Ocran, prince of the children of Asher, offered:"

Numbers 7:73 "His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:74 "One golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense:"

Numbers 7:75 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:76 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:77 "And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Pagiel the son of Ocran."

Numbers 7:78 "On the twelfth day Ahira the son of Enan, prince of the children of Naphtali, offered :"

Numbers 7:79 "His offering was one silver charger, the weight whereof was an hundred and thirty shekels, one silver bowl of seventy shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary; both of them full of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering:"

Numbers 7:80 "One golden spoon of ten shekels, full of incense:"

Numbers 7:81 "One young bullock, one ram, one lamb of the first year, for a burnt offering:"

Numbers 7:82 "One kid of the goats for a sin offering:"

Numbers 7:83 "And for a sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he goats, five lambs of the first year: this was the offering of Ahira the son of Enan."

Numbers 7:84 "This was the dedication of the altar, in the day when it was anointed, by the princes of Israel: twelve chargers of silver, twelve silver bowls, twelve spoons of gold:"

So the twelve silver chargers or trays, and twelve silver bowls, and the twelve spoons of gold that would be used in the tabernacle were given by each of the princes of the tribes of Israel.

Numbers 7:85 "Each charger of silver weighing an hundred and thirty shekels, each bowl seventy: all the silver vessels weighed two thousand and four hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:"

Again, each charger having the weight of four and a half pounds of silver, and silver bowl weighing about two pounds.

Numbers 7:86 "The golden spoons were twelve, full of incense, weighing ten shekels apiece, after the shekel of the sanctuary: all the gold of the spoons was an hundred and twenty shekels."

Think of it, the golden spoons weighed just over four pounds of gold.

Numbers 7:87 "All the oxen for the burnt offering were twelve bullocks, the rams twelve, the lambs of the first year twelve, with their meat offering: and the kids of the goats for sin offering twelve."

For the offerings: for "burnt offerings

12 Bullocks

12 rams

12 first year lambs

12 goats

48 animals for sacrifice.

Numbers 7:88 "And all the oxen for the sacrifice of the peace offerings were twenty and four bullocks, the rams sixty, the he goats sixty, the lambs of the first year sixty. This was the dedication of the altar, after that it was anointed."

For the offerings: for "Peace offering", anointed and offered on the altar;

24 Bullocks

60 rams

60 goats

60 first year lambs

204 Animals

Numbers 7:89 "And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with Him, then he heard the voice of One speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that was upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and He spake unto him."

After Moses had made the offerings unto the Lord at the altar of God, he went into the tabernacle, before the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant, and there God Jehovah YHVH spoke directly to Moses. God spoke from that mercy seat that was mounted on top of the Ark of the covenant. The Mercy seat was the place where all the high priest approached God for the centuries of time to the time of Christ, until that day that our Lord went to the cross, and the veil to the holy of holies was rent in two, and we then were allowed to approach the Father directly in Jesus name.
