Chapter 114

"Israel's Deliverance from Egypt."

Psalms 114:1 "When Israel went out of Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language;"

The "House of Jacob" is the natural seed of all tribes. When these Israelites came out of Egypt, they spoke different than where they went into Egypt four hundred years before. They were different also.

Psalms 114:2 "Judah was His sanctuary, And Israel His dominion."

"Was" as used here is "became" in the Hebrew text. Judah became God's sanctuary in due time. We see that even at this time God was preparing to separate the two, the house of Judah and the house of Israel, that would take place seven centuries later. Today the kingdom is divided.

Psalms 114:3 "The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan was driven back."

God is using some natural things to explain some thoughts on the power and control of our Heavenly Father. History is prophecy for that which happened in the past, shall happen again, for there is nothing new under the sun. God opened the way for the Israelites to pass through, and the sea and the river was driven back so they could walk through on dry ground.

Psalms 114:4 "The mountains skipped like rams, And the little hills like lambs."

This of course refers to the shaking of mount Sinai when Moses was on the mount receiving the laws for the people.

Psalms 114:5 "What ailed thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? Thou Jordan, that thou wast driven back?"

When the power of Almighty God moves on mountains, nations or oceans, they move.

Psalms 114:6 "Ye mountains, that ye skipped like rams; And ye little hills, like lambs."

Again, this is to illustrate the power of our Heavenly Father's presence. The God of Jacob is powerful, and He made the covenant with our people.

Psalms 114:7 "Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the GOD of Jacob;"

Psalms 114:8 "Which turned the rock into a standing water, The flint into a fountain of water."

Nature itself saw and respected the power of God, and the people also was that power. Yet they turned from the protection of our Father and started into the worship of idols. God opened a dry rock in the middle of a desert and made fresh pure water to flow from it. Water to quench the thirst of not only the people but their animals also. Today the prophetic meaning of this is that God is our Rock. He will open those dry desert days and the fountain of living waters from His Word will quench our spiritual thirst. When you partake of that water, you never thirst again. Not for knowledge or wisdom, but it is a continual process of feeding your mind and filling your soul for all eternity.
