THE PSALMS Chapter 136 "Praise" This Bible Study is is provided by http://www.theseason.org/ and shared with permission from it's author R. Christopherson We will notice that the outline of Psalms 136 is identical to Psalms 135. However this Psalm is presented to where a large body of people are to sing all at the same time. As a song, there is a lot of repetition through out the chapter. However in the simplicity of the chapter, there is a continual flow of thanks to our Heavenly Father for His great mercy. Psalms 136:1 "O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is good: For His mercy endureth for ever." This phrase will be given over and over, "Give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and His mercy endureth for ever." Notice however that in the King James version, each time the word "endureth" is used it is in italics. It was added by the translators. So why would the translators be so intimidated that they would use "endureth" over and over. In the Hebrew, the word is "amad", meaning "to stand, to continue, to confirm, to ordain;" So it means that from the beginning of the world way back in that first earth age, this world will continue, and the truths of God's Word will remain exact, without change all the way through this age of flesh man, through the Millennium age of Christ's kingdom here on earth; and it will continue throughout the ageless infinite kingdom after the great white throne judgment. Grasp the fact that the mercy that God has for man, has never changed, not in the first earth age, not this age of flesh man. God's love for you is just as great today, as the day He created your soul eons ago in the first earth age. Psalms 136:2 "O give thanks unto the God of gods: For His mercy endureth for ever." Give thanks unto the God of elohim, the God of each of those souls that He created. His mercy and love will never end. His love for you will never end, even when you fail to follow His Ways, His love is still present. Psalms 136:3 "O give thanks to the Lord of Lords: For His mercy endureth for ever." God is the Father of all things. Psalms 136:4 "To Him Who alone doeth great wonders: For His mercy endureth for ever." His love will be with us always, world without end. Psalms 136:5 "To Him That by wisdom made the heavens: For His mercy endureth for ever." Again, over and over, we have twenty six times it is repeated: For His mercy endureth for ever. Remember that this was a song that was sung by the congregation when they came together to worship. Psalms 136:6 "To Him That stretcheth out the earth above the waters: For His mercy endureth for ever." This calls attention to the fact that the first earth age ended with the earth land mass falling below the waters. Then in Genesis 1:2-26 we witness how God recreated this earth to be inhabited all over again. When this earth was first created, it was perfect and fit for life, but after the fall by Satan, when on third followed, the earth became a ruin, unfit for all life. Psalms 136:7 "To Him That made great lights: For His mercy endureth for ever:" This reminds us of Genesis 1:14: "And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for sings, and for seasons, and for days and years." " God gave us the Sun by day and moon for the night, and the stars to set the season, and the signs to mark his great plan. Psalms 136:8 "The sun to rule by day: For His mercy endureth for ever." This is from Genesis 1:16. Psalms 136:9 "The moon and stars to rule by night: for His mercy endureth for ever." Of course the moon controls the tides and the times of planting for the harvest, and the moment of the moon is controlled by our heavenly Father. Psalms 136:10 "To Him That smote Egypt in their firstborn: For His mercy endureth for ever." This is a reminder from Exodus 12:29; "And it came to pass, that at midnight the Lord smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the first born of cattle." He didn't smite Egypt to destroy Egypt, but that Israel might be saved. Had the Pharaoh released the Israelites, the first born would not have been smitten. God saved the people that were to carry forth the truth of His Word. It is through the Israelites that the Word went to the World, and the Messiah would come through. Psalms 136:11 "And brought out Israel from among them: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:12 "With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: For His mercy endureth for ever." Our Father's strong arm is till stretched out to help you, when you turn to Him for help. He must become our rest, as each of us rest in His hand through His Son, Jesus the Christ. Psalms 136:13 "To Him Which divided the Red sea into parts: for His mercy endureth for ever:" Genesis 13:18 "But God led the People about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed out of the land of Egypt." Psalms 136:14 "And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: For His mercy endureth for ever: Psalms 136:15 "But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: For His mercy endureth for ever." When Pharaoh went after the Israelites, God allowed the Israelites to cross through the Red sea, but when the Egyptian army followed, God brought the sea over them and drowned all of them. Exodus 14:30 "Thus the Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore." God was faithful to the Israelites, and protected them from the enemy. Psalms 136:16 "To Him Which led His People through the wilderness: For His mercy endureth for ever." Psalms 136:17 "To Him Which smote great kings: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:18 "And slew famous kings: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:19 "Sihon king of the Amorites: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:20 "And Og the king of Bashan: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:21 "And gave their land for an heritage: For His mercy endureth for ever:" Psalms 136:22 "Even an heritage unto Israel His servant: For His mercy endureth for ever." Psalms 136:23 "Who remembered us in our low estate: For His mercy endureth for ever:" When we are at our lowest, He is there to lift us up and heal our spirits. Psalms 136:24 "And hath redeemed us from our enemies: For His mercy endureth for ever." Psalms 136:25 "Who giveth food to all flesh: For His mercy endureth for ever." Psalms 136:26 "O give thanks unto the God of heaven: For His mercy endureth for ever." These Psalms are to teach us to be in a position to where we are never depressed. If we listen to their advise, we never need to be lacking for wisdom. You are loved by our Father, and He deserves the praise and honor we give Him, for His mercy does endure for ever.
