"Maschil, A Psalm of David, when the Ziphims [Battlement] came and said to Saul, Doth not David hide himself with us?"

This chapter is also written "to the chief Musician on Neginoth [Smitings]." It is God that will do the smitings through his acts and with words. "Maschil" means instructions, and the instruction will come from the smitings. You can see that there will be traitors within this chapter. Those traitors will be those that are close to you and give false witness against you.

Historically, it is referring to that time when Saul was out to take David's life, as recorded in I Samuel 23:19; 26. "Then said the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, "Doth not david hide himself with us in strong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon?

Psalms 54:1 "Save me, O God, by Thy name, And judge me by Thy strength."

That is exactly how God does judge us, by the name of Jesus Christ, and by what we have done.

Psalms 54:2 "Hear my prayer, O God; Give ear to the words of my mouth."

David is hiding from his enemy and asking for protection.

Psalms 54:3 "For strangers are risen up against me, And oppressors seek after my soul: They have not set God before them. Selah."

These strangers that are risen up against David, the Ziphites, don't believe in God. They have their own gods, and don't know the one true God. Saul had sunk so low that he even sought to communicate with familiar spirits, those of the devil for his help. Satan accommodated Saul and even cause Saul to believe that he had spoken with Samuel. Saul though he got a word direct from God, when all the time it was a familiar spirit speaking to him.

This is an example of how it is today, for they do hear spirits talking to them, but they have no idea who those spirits are, so they attribute it to God, when in fact it was the devil. That event in Saul's life did not happen by accident, but it allowed us to see how it would be in these end times. Familiar spirits are just as real today as they were in Saul's day, and they can deceive you, so and meditate what we have talked about over the past three verses. Think a moment, and connect David's danger with David's true and only source of help. That help is your help today.

That danger that David faced was king Saul seeking his life; and and this Selah connects it to David' sources of help. There is only one true source of help, and that is what we will see in the next verses.

Psalms 54:4 "Behold, God is mine helper: The Lord is with them that uphold my soul."

God is the only source of help, and those that are with Him are the angelic hosts of heaven. God uses this host of heaven to fulfill prophecy and make things happen that are suppose to happen. Just as God was David's helper, He is also our helper when we call upon Him. God does hear every prayer that come from your thought and mind. God answers you and your prayers in His way, not the way that you order. That way is to fulfill His Work and use you as His servant. Father can see the outcome of your prayer whereas we can not, and that is why many times those prayers go unanswered.

Psalms 54:5 "He shall reward evil unto mine enemies: Cut them off in Thy truth."

Did you get this? God will bring or reward evil upon your enemies. He will cut them off "with" thy truth. God's truth is the sword that makes things happen to fulfill all prophecy. It is the sword of truth that we are to carry with our gospel armor on and in place. God's Word will make room for itself, and you don't have to make excuses for it. It brings you wisdom, and peace of mind, as sets your life on a solid foundation. It is the promises of god to you, one of His children.

Psalms 54:6 "I will freely sacrifice unto Thee: I will praise Thy name, O Lord; for it is good."

The name of the Lord is truly good. YHVH, The Father is truly going to help you when you seek His help. We freely sacrifice when you thank the Lord and praise Him. When we tell him that we love Him and do what His Word instructs us to do.

Psalms 54:7 "For He hath delivered me out of all trouble: And mine eye hath seen his desire upon mine enemies."

"To the chief Musician on Negioth."

God delivered David out of all trouble, and He will do that for you also. My friend, you don't have to worry about taking vengeance out on your enemies. God will do that for you. Romans 12:19 "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." Vengeance belongs to God. If someone touches you; they touch God, if they seek to harm you, they are attacking God. If someone offends you, they offend Christ. Then there are an entire host of angels there to make things right, and take vengeance against them.
